Drawn by a passion for helping others and a curiosity about Indigenous culture, Claire\u2019s 14-week placement in Katherine offered her a chance to grow professionally and personally.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Claire&#8217;s Path to Social Work<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Claire\u2019s love for connecting with people and hearing their stories of resilience led her to social work.<strong><em> \u201cIt\u2019s incredibly fulfilling to see people get back on their feet after facing significant hardships,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> she shares. This passion guided her to the NT, where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unimelb.edu.au\/\">University Melbourne<\/a>\u2019s student sought to bridge the gap between academic knowledge of Indigenous issues and lived realities.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cI wanted to gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous culture and history directly from Indigenous people,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Claire says.<strong><em> \u201cThe Katherine region, with its strong Indigenous population, was the perfect place for this.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Life on Placement<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Claire\u2019s placement, organised by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/\">Flinders University<\/a>, was split between two organisations: <a href=\"https:\/\/families.nt.gov.au\/\">Territory Families<\/a>, where she worked as a child protection practitioner, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwhb.com.au\/\">Katherine West Health Board<\/a>, where she supported clients as a domestic and family violence case worker.<\/p>\n<p>A typical day often involved long travel\u2014up to four hours\u2014to remote Indigenous communities. <strong><em>\u201cWe stayed for multiple days, meeting clients and connecting them with the services they needed to overcome adversity,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> she recalls.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside practical skills, Claire gained invaluable cultural insights from Indigenous practitioners and clients. <em><strong>\u201cI learned so much about culturally respectful practices and the importance of community and family, which often contrasts with the isolation in Western culture,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> she notes.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Return to Katherine<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The placement not only deepened Claire\u2019s understanding of social work but also shaped her career path. Inspired by the women she supported and upon receiving a job offer, she decided to return to the NT after graduation.<\/p>\n<p>At the <a href=\"https:\/\/kwcc.org.au\/\">Katherine Women\u2019s Crisis Centre<\/a>, Claire provided support to women escaping domestic violence. <em><strong>\u201cThe rate of domestic violence in the NT is three times the national average, disproportionately affecting Indigenous women,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> she explains.<strong><em> \u201cWorking here has been both confronting and empowering. The strength of these women is incredible.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s role at the shelter has been deeply rewarding. <strong><em>\u201cSome nights I stayed overnight, sharing stories over dinner and playing with the children,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> she says. <strong><em>\u201cI\u2019ll never forget the excitement of children running up to greet me when I arrive at work.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Unique Opportunities in the NT<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For interstate students considering a placement in the NT, Claire has one piece of advice: <strong><em>\u201cTake the leap. It\u2019s a unique and fulfilling experience. The support from organisers and the sense of community make it hard to leave.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s experience highlights the rewarding aspect of rural and remote placements.
