\u201cI had heard amazing things about study placements in the Northern Territory, so I requested one for my final year,\u201d<\/em> Bella Downing explains. Her three-month placement in Nhulunbuy, East Arnhem Land, opened the door to new perspectives in her speech pathology career.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Step Outside of Comfort Zone<\/h3>\n

Bella, who completed a Bachelor of Speech Pathology<\/a> with Flinders University in Adelaide, chose her field out of a passion for healthcare and the variety it offered. \u201cI was drawn to the diverse scope of practice and services within speech pathology,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> the South Australian shares.<\/p>\n

When the chance to do her placement in the Northern Territory arose, she seized it, eager to step outside her comfort zone. \u201c<\/em><\/strong>It was a life-changing opportunity where I learnt so much from the Yolngu community, particularly around culture and the importance of relationship building.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

A Typical Day in East Arnhem Land<\/h3>\n

Bella\u2019s placement days were rich and varied. She shared accommodation with fellow Flinders students and worked alongside a multidisciplinary team. \u201cWe supported local aged care services, made home visits, and provided therapy at Shady Beach near Nhulunbuy,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> she recalls. Her placement also included weekly visits to the Garrthalala Homelands<\/a>\u00a0and a unique opportunity to learn from Yolngu Elders. \u201cThey taught us about Yolngu languages, kinship systems, and so much more,\u201d<\/strong> <\/em>she says.<\/p>\n

Fridays spent learning On Country were particularly memorable.\u201cThe clients were so generous with their time and knowledge,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> Bella says. \u201cOur clinical educator, Chris, reminded us we\u2019d take away more than we could ever give\u2014and that was true.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Lessons That Last<\/h3>\n

The experience reshaped Bella\u2019s understanding of her role as a health professional. \u201cI learnt about cultural humility, and that I am foremost a learner when working with Aboriginal clients and communities,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> she says. These lessons have become integral to her current practice.<\/p>\n

Bella also credits the placement with building her confidence. \u201cLiving and working remotely seemed daunting, but the support from Flinders made it manageable,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> she says.<\/p>\n

A Career in Remote Communities<\/h3>\n

Inspired by her time in East Arnhem Land, Bella now works with the Department for Education<\/a>\u2019s Anangu Lands Team in South Australia. \u201cI apply the collaborative and reflective practices I learned during my placement every day,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> she says.<\/p>\n

Bella encourages students to embrace rural placements. \u201cDo it! It\u2019s a unique opportunity to learn about culture, language, and remote living in a supported way.
