Straight after high school, he did not achieve the grades he needed. <strong><em>\u201cI went into nursing because I knew it would give me hands-on healthcare experience,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> he recalls. He kept sitting the medical entry exam more than once and was finally accepted at 28. <strong><em>\u201cBy then I had a much clearer sense of purpose. He grew up on a cattle station 150 kilometres from the city, travelling more than an hour each way to school. Later, while studying nursing, he worked in a 000 ambulance call centre. <em><strong>\u201cIt really opened my eyes to how distance affects access to healthcare and how vulnerable that can make people feel,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> he says. <em><strong>\u201cAt the same time I\u2019ve seen the strength of rural communities. People step up for one another.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Learning that sticks<\/h3>\n<p>Isaak values the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/flinders-nt\/study\/nt-medical-program\">NT Medical Program<\/a> for its early patient contact and strong mentorship. <strong><em>\u201cOne week you learn about a condition in class and the next you see it in a real patient in hospital. That\u2019s when the knowledge really sticks.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> He also appreciates how accessible the teaching doctors are. <em><strong>\u201cThey might be working in the hospital one day and teaching you the next. That continuity is rare.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>What\u2019s next for Isaak<\/h3>\n<p>His rural upbringing and background in emergency nursing have sparked an interest in Rural Generalism. <strong><em>\u201cI want to work in a community where I can build genuine relationships but still keep my emergency skills sharp. But if something deep down is calling you to it, trust that. Life experience is an asset.
