\nForum has been hearing the same thing since she was young: \u201cYou would make a great therapist.<\/em>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have always been a compassionate and empathetic person, often the friend that others feel safe opening up to<\/em>,\u201d she says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now studying the Master of Counselling (Behavioural Health) at Flinders University<\/a>, Forum has found a pathway to turn those natural qualities into the skills needed for a career supporting others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now in her second year, Forum says some of her most valuable learning has come through practical experiences, where she has developed her confidence in working with clients and strengthened her communication and professional boundaries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have learned the importance of ensuring client safety, assessing risk, building genuine relationships, maintaining rapport, and keeping clients engaged while working through a trauma-informed and neuro-affirming lens<\/em>,\u201d she says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Forum understands that a career in counselling can come with its challenges, including burnout, vicarious trauma and countertransference. However, she says the opportunity to make a meaningful difference makes the journey worthwhile.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhile it comes with challenges, it is incredibly meaningful to see clients leave sessions feeling more regulated, knowing their safety has been supported, and hearing feedback that you have made a positive impact in their healing journey<\/em>,\u201d she says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout her studies, Forum has also valued the support of her teachers and supervisors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe teachers and supervisors have been incredibly valuable and supportive throughout the process, especially when we feel stuck or unsure,<\/em>\u201d she says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She has enjoyed the variety of learning experiences within the Master of Counselling, from written assignments and quizzes to role-plays, recorded mock sessions, presentations and group projects.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis variety keeps the learning engaging and interesting,<\/em>\u201d she says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For Forum, her placement experience has also helped shape the direction she wants to take after graduation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI aspire to support adolescents in school-based counselling, as my passion for working with young people grew through my placement experience and learning about the many challenges teenagers navigate,<\/em>\u201d she says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These challenges can include academic stress, difficulties at home, relationship and friendship issues, and concerns around drugs, alcohol and vaping\u00a0–\u00a0all of which can affect a young person\u2019s sleep, motivation, wellbeing and mental health.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI would really love to create a safe space where they can learn coping strategies, develop self-compassion, and build the confidence needed to navigate life both during and after school.<\/em>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For Forum, counselling is more than a career. It is an opportunity to help people feel heard, supported and better equipped to navigate life\u2019s challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n
