{"id":3717,"date":"2026-10-15T09:50:44","date_gmt":"2026-10-14T23:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mph-news\/?p=3717"},"modified":"2026-10-15T09:50:44","modified_gmt":"2026-10-14T23:20:44","slug":"a-stronger-voice-for-nt-medical-students-has-arrived","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mph-news\/2026\/10\/15\/a-stronger-voice-for-nt-medical-students-has-arrived\/","title":{"rendered":"A stronger voice for NT medical students has arrived"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Northern Territory now has its own council for medical students.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More than 50 people attended the official launch of the Northern Territory Medical Students&#8217; Council (NTMSC) on 20 August 2026. Guests included students, university leaders and health professionals. Flinders University and Charles Darwin University (CDU) students met each other and played a friendly game of trivia.<\/p>\n<p>NTMSC represents medical students across both NT medical programs. Associate Professor Emma Kennedy, Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/flinders-nt\/study\/nt-medical-program\">NT Medical Program<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/flinders-nt\/regional-training-hub\">Regional Training Hub NT<\/a>, explained its role. <em><strong>&#8220;This council has a different role to the Flinders and CDU Medical Societies, bringing their voices together,&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> she said.<\/p>\n<p>President Peter Susanto said the timing makes sense. <strong><em>&#8220;With two medical schools in the NT, it is now pertinent for the NT&#8217;s medical students to have our own representative body, in line with other jurisdictions,&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3720\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3720\" style=\"width: 444px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3720\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mph-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2026\/10\/Northern-Territory-Medical-Students-Council-NTMSC-launch-20-August-2026__-1024x613.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"444\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mph-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2026\/10\/Northern-Territory-Medical-Students-Council-NTMSC-launch-20-August-2026__-1024x613.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mph-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2026\/10\/Northern-Territory-Medical-Students-Council-NTMSC-launch-20-August-2026__-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mph-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2026\/10\/Northern-Territory-Medical-Students-Council-NTMSC-launch-20-August-2026__-768x460.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mph-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2026\/10\/Northern-Territory-Medical-Students-Council-NTMSC-launch-20-August-2026__-1536x920.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/mph-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2026\/10\/Northern-Territory-Medical-Students-Council-NTMSC-launch-20-August-2026__-2048x1227.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3720\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The council president Peter Susanto presented main advocacy priorities<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The council will work with universities, health services and the wider community. Its five advocacy priorities are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>expanding specialty training in the NT<\/li>\n<li>improving campus and study facility access<\/li>\n<li>easing financial hardship, including paid placement<\/li>\n<li>providing independent off-campus mental health counselling<\/li>\n<li>supporting students with external responsibilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Susanto, who is currently a Year 3 medical student with Flinders University, said the council also wants students to feel connected.<em><strong> &#8220;Our aim is to strengthen connection and cohesion between medical students across different cohorts, campuses and training sites,&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor Kennedy summed up the mood. <strong><em>&#8220;We are all looking forward to working with the Council and the Medical Societies to promote health in the NT!&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/flinders-nt\/regional-training-hub\/doctors-nt\">Doctors for the NT<\/a> network hosted by the Regional Training Hub NT supported the event with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.racgp.org.au\/\">RACGP<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acrrm.org.au\/\">ACRRM<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdu.edu.au\/\">CDU<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ruralgeneralist.nt.gov.au\/about-us\/rural-generalist-coordination-unit\">Rural Generalist Coordination Unit<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ntphn.org.au\/\">NT PHN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about studying medicine with Flinders University in the NT, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/flinders-nt\/study\/nt-medical-program\">NT website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Northern Territory now has its own council for medical students.
