This is reflected in his response to the prestigious nomination: <strong><em>\u201cI\u2019m genuinely humbled by this recognition and particularly grateful to my peers and those who took the time to nominate me,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> he says.<\/p>\n<p>Jason has worked across research, policy and practice to support First Nations boys\u2019 and men\u2019s health. He has also taken on voluntary, community-focused roles along the way.<\/p>\n<p>His commitment grew through the people around him. <em><strong>\u201cFor more than 25 years, I\u2019ve had the privilege of working alongside some incredible people who share a commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and boys,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> he says.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Building networks across the Top End<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In 2013\/2014, Jason co-founded the Darwin Men\u2019s Inter-Agency Network. The network now connects more than 180 members and 30 stakeholders across the Top End. It gives services and community members a shared space to work together. It also keeps men\u2019s health on the agenda.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Currently, Jason leads Deadly Male, a national charitable initiative. He launched it at the National Men\u2019s Health Gathering in October 2025.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Elevating First Nations voices<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Across the Northern Territory and Australia, Jason champions practical, community-led solutions. His networks lift First Nations voices and strengthen culturally safe environments.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">These trusted connections matter. They help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men talk, connect and lead healthier, more confident lives.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Work that goes beyond awards<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Jason keeps his focus on the work itself. <strong><em>\u201cI\u2019ve never done this work for awards or recognition. I do it because the work matters, our men and boys matter, and there\u2019s still so much more to be done,\u201d<\/em> <\/strong>he says.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He also shares the credit. <strong><em>\u201cI see this nomination as recognition not just of my contribution, but of the many people who have walked alongside me, shared the challenges and kept the men\u2019s health agenda alive over the years,\u201d<\/em> <\/strong>he concludes.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Congratulations, Jason, on your <a href=\"https:\/\/australianoftheyear.com.au\/\">2027 Australian of the Year<\/a> NT Local Hero nomination and good luck for the NT ceremony on 9 November, where the Territory winners will be announced.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jason Bonson has spent three decades improving health outcomes for First Nations boys and men.
