During the first 3 days the research team \u2018retreated\u2019 at a beautiful venue on <a href=\"http:\/\/rsaa.anu.edu.au\/observatories\/mount-stromlo-observatory\">Mt Stromlo<\/a> to discuss CRE-Health Equity\u2019s four major <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/medicine\/research\/centres\/centre-for-research-excellence-in-the-social-determinants-of-health-equity\/research-themes\/research-themes_home.cfm\">research themes<\/a>. Two international visitors joined the retreat, Chief Investigator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalhealthequity.ca\/content\/ronald-labonte\">Ron Labont\u00e9<\/a> Canada Research Chair in Globalization and Health Equity at the University of Ottawa, and Associate Investigator, Dame <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpool.ac.uk\/psychology-health-and-society\/staff\/margaret-whitehead\/\">Margaret Whitehead<\/a> W.H. Duncan Professor of Public Health and Director of the WHO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpool.ac.uk\/psychology-health-and-society\/research\/who\/\">Collaborating Centre for Policy Research on Social Determinants of Health<\/a> from the University of Liverpool.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday the CRE-Health Equity team led by Prof <a href=\"https:\/\/researchers.anu.edu.au\/researchers\/friel-s\">Sharon Friel<\/a> and Prof <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/people\/fran.baum\">Fran Baum<\/a> hosted a very successful <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/cre-health-equity\/2016\/05\/06\/nhmrc-cre-national-policy-forum-12-may-2016-canberra\/\">National Policy Forum<\/a> at the ANU titled <em>A fair go for all: Addressing Social and Health Inequities in Australia and Internationally<\/em>. The forum included two panel discussions. The first, on the topic of <em>Health Equity and the Budget, <\/em>included Andrew Leigh of the Labor Party, Dr Richard Di Natale from the Australian Greens, Dr John Hewson, former leader of the Liberal Party, and Profs Friel and Whitehead. The discussion was hosted by Paul Barclay, from<strong> RN\u2019s Big Ideas programme <\/strong>and is available <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radionational\/programs\/bigideas\/health-equity-and-the-budget\/7419668\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a><strong>.\u00a0 <\/strong>The second panel discussed <em>Lifting the Lid on Systemic Racism: Indigenous Health<\/em> and was led by Romlie Mokak, CEO of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lowitja.org.au\/\">Lowitja Institute<\/a> and included four other Indigenous leaders on health and equity: Janine Mohamed, CEO of the Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses and Midwives; Dr Tamara Mackean from Flinders University (also a member of the CRE-Health Equity research team); Luke Pearson, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/indigenousx.com.au\/about\/#.Vzu8uk1f3mQ\">@IndigenousX<\/a>; and Richard Weston, CEO of the Healing Foundation. We will be publishing a short report on this panel discussion in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_676\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-676\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/southgate-institute-news\/files\/2016\/05\/Policy-Forum-photo.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-676\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-676 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/southgate-institute-news\/files\/2016\/05\/Policy-Forum-photo-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Policy Forum photo\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-676\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Participants at CRE Policy Forum Day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the Friday, research team leaders met with the CRE-Health Equity <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/medicine\/research\/centres\/centre-for-research-excellence-in-the-social-determinants-of-health-equity\/our-people.cfm\">Critical Policy Reference Group<\/a>.
