{"id":14,"date":"2018-07-23T12:03:39","date_gmt":"2018-07-23T02:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/stem\/?p=14"},"modified":"2018-07-23T12:03:39","modified_gmt":"2018-07-23T02:33:39","slug":"sa-science-students-urged-become-olympians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/stem\/2018\/07\/23\/sa-science-students-urged-become-olympians\/","title":{"rendered":"SA science students urged to become Olympians"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Want to become an Olympian?<\/h3>\n<p>Year 10-11 students that love science and want to push themselves are being urged to register in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asi.edu.au\/programs\/australian-science-olympiads\/\">Australian Science Olympiad<\/a> Exams in August, which can help secure place at the 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/apho2019.asi.edu.au\/\">Asian Physics Olympiad<\/a> in Adelaide.<\/p>\n<p>Flinders University is sponsoring 500 free registrations for SA students that want to take part in the Exams, with the deadline to register looming on Wednesday 25 July.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Science Olympiads are a national extension program for top performing secondary science students.<\/p>\n<p>The Exams help select high achievers for a Summer School at Australian National University (Canberra) in January and from there 17 students are invited to represent Australia at one of the International Science Olympiads in Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science and Physics.<\/p>\n<p>The Asian Physics Olympiad will be held in Adelaide in 2019 \u2013 the first time it has been held in Australia \u2013 allowing successful SA students that progress through the stages to represent their country on home turf.<\/p>\n<p>Flinders University STEM Education Research Section Head, Dr Maria Parappilly, urged passionate SA science students to give the exams a go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents often perceive physics as a difficult and challenging subject without even giving it a go,\u201d Dr Parappilly said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake this as an enrichment opportunity to identify your talents, strengths and abilities; to develop problem-solving skills; and to motivate yourself.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;d also like to see more female participation at the Olympiads &#8211; science has no gender and it can be enjoyed by all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Interested students can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asi.edu.au\/programs\/australian-science-olympiads\/how-to-participate-in-the-australian-science-olympiads\/\">register for the exams<\/a>, via their teachers, by Wednesday 25 July using the promo code FLINDERSFREE.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Want to become an Olympian?
