Dozens of solar cars built and developed by people around the world have just completed a race from Darwin to Adelaide.\u00a0 Flinders University entered a vehicle in the Cruiser class.<\/p>\n<p>Solar-powered vehicles are very cool, but they\u2019re just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to renewable energy in South Australia.\u00a0 In fact, as of this year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stem.createsend1.com\/t\/r-l-jdzjykk-l-x\/\">more than 50% of SA\u2019s power comes from renewable energy<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Solar and wind power are not only good for the environment \u2013 once running, they\u2019re often the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stem.createsend1.com\/t\/r-l-jdzjykk-l-m\/\">cheapest forms of energy<\/a>.\u00a0 There\u2019s likely to be a lot of work in the renewable energy industry in the future.\u00a0 Here are three of the interesting renewable energy innovations that the solar car route will pass by.<\/p>\n<p>The entire town of Coober Pedy ran on 100% renewable energy for 93 hours earlier this year.\u00a0 The town is home to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stem.createsend1.com\/t\/r-l-jdzjykk-l-c\/\">relatively new<\/a>\u00a0solar plant, wind turbines and a battery, designed to create more reliable and cheaper energy for the local community.<\/p>\n<p>In Port Augusta,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stem.createsend1.com\/t\/r-l-jdzjykk-l-q\/\">Sundrop Farms<\/a>\u00a0grow tomatoes and other vegetables in entirely solar-powered greenhouses.\u00a0 The greenhouses are watered with desalinated seawater, which has also been powered by their solar tower.\u00a0 They sell over 17,000 tonnes of tomatoes to supermarkets each year!<\/p>\n<p>One of the key challenges facing solar and wind power this decade has been consistency \u2013 because the energy can\u2019t be collected when it\u2019s dark and\/or calm, we need better ways of storing electricity.\u00a0 This is what the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stem.createsend1.com\/t\/r-l-jdzjykk-l-a\/\">Hornsdale Power reserve<\/a>\u00a0is doing, near Jamestown\u00a0 \u2013 they\u2019re operating the world\u2019s largest lithium-ion battery to store electricity for when it is more needed.\u00a0 (Batteries are also something solar cars rely on \u2013 the most effective cars have very efficient batteries and ways of recovering energy from the car as it runs.)<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot of very cool work being done in renewable energy in this state!\u00a0 If this interests you, you might want to take a look at our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stem.createsend1.com\/t\/r-l-jdzjykk-l-f\/\">Electrical Engineering<\/a>\u00a0degree or our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stem.createsend1.com\/t\/r-l-jdzjykk-l-z\/\">Nanotechnology degree<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Did you follow the\u00a0Bridgestone World Solar Challenge\u00a0at all?
