Traditionally, universities enter teams in a local event, with the best of the best earning their way to Sydney for the final.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Warman Design and Build Competition 2021\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZgAaWCjl0ls?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Former competitor\u00a0CSE Research Associate\u00a0Robert (Robbie) Trott has been heavily involved in the competition for some time,\u00a0assisting\u00a0the Flinders\u00a0entries in past years.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe Warman Design and Build Competition is an annual event usually held in Sydney that gathers 2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nd<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and 3<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rd<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0year Mechanical Engineering students to develop an engineering solution for the fictitious people of Gondwana whose planet is ravaged by natural and anthropometric disasters. Each year&#8217;s challenge is to build a prototype system to fix a different problem.\u201d<\/span><span competition faced the same fate in 2021.\u00a0Robbie\u00a0saw an opportunity to keep the experience alive for students \u2013 at\u00a0least\u00a0at a\u00a0local\u00a0level.\u00a0<\/span><span The National Competition has a great energy and it is fantastic to see all the\u00a0different ways\u00a0teams solved\u00a0the same problem.\u00a0There\u2019s\u00a0also\u00a0is a great camaraderie between teams. The team that represents the University at the National Competition has to dig deep to show off their best and without the Competition there is a missed opportunity to develop important skills.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen the National Competition was cancelled the organizers polled universities on their capacity to hold local events, my hand shot up and we were fortunate enough to be able to host the event.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With that, a local competition was able to go ahead,\u00a0with two teams\u00a0representing\u00a0each of Flinders University, The University of\u00a0Adelaide\u00a0and the University of South Australia. We had enthusiastic students and we were able to hold an event as authentic as possible to the National Competition. Students were able to network with our judges that were\u00a0representing\u00a0different industries and even got in and helped each other out when things\u00a0weren\u2019t\u00a0working as planned. We have some really promising future Engineers on our hands. I have been mentoring our teams since 2018 and each year we manage to improve on the excellent standards of the previous year and it is good to have the experience of the previous years successes and lessons on hand for next year.
