What started out as a field trip to measure Fairy Wrens for data collection at Cleland Wildlife Park, also sparked a passion and enthusiasm for science in the field from one particular student, strengthening his clarity on his study and career direction. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was so excited,\u201d said Ned Nosek, about what the day meant to him. “Literally, like a kid inside.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Ned’s\u00a0journey\u00a0to\u00a0studying\u00a0a Bachelor of Science (Animal Behaviour)\u00a0a different one\u00a0and a day surrounded by nature, a host of animals\u00a0and some\u00a0genuine\u00a0hands-on experience\u00a0was\u00a0formative.\u00a0\u201c<\/span>Seeing how demonstrators conduct the study and data collection\u00a0really resonated with me, as did being able to see real-life data and how useful spending a large amount of time outside can be.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cute and colourful Fairy Wrens took some clever targeting, through strategically placed nets, to capture and measure. It was a day full of practical problem solving.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The\u00a0theme of\u00a0curious minds\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0limited to the student, with some very inquisitive Cape Barren Geese and Numbats doing their best to investigate the goings on. The\u00a0students\u00a0were also taken behind the scenes to see an echidna\u00a0not on public display.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The experience proved inspirational for Ned\u2019s study\/career aspirations. \u201c<\/span>Before this field trip, I just wanted to have the opportunity to get work with or indirectly benefit animals. After this field trip, I really feel as if it is possible for me to continue further studies,\u00a0perhaps\u00a0Honors. I was never confident in my abilities as I am\u00a0perhaps not\u00a0as book smart as others surrounding me in my course. The demonstration staff really opened my eyes to believe it is possible, giving me a huge confidence boost along with determination.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was another pivotal moment for Ned who, during a gap year after high school, found himself searching for direction and purpose in a study pathway. His love of animals and the outdoors, as well as his experience growing up on a farm, led him to explore a Foundation Studies course. It was a move that resonated with him more than traditional high school learning and gave him a pathway into Flinders University.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The style of study and the encouragement from the teachers and demonstrators has been inspiring to Ned.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThey have a clear passion that I can relate to, seeing\u00a0that\u00a0hard work\u00a0can pay off and to stay determined as anyone can get to that point with the right motivation.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All of which led to day amongst the Fairy Wrens and\u00a0a world of\u00a0future possibilities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
