I can’t believe four months have flown by in the blink of an eye, and my exchange at Flinders University is coming to an end. This experience will remain etched in my memory for a lifetime. I’ve had an amazing time, met friends from diverse backgrounds, and faced challenges that helped me grow as an artist and an individual.

Living abroad without my parents for the first time taught me to be independent and accountable for my actions. I also learned to be more sociable—because you never know who might become a lifelong friend. Thankfully, living in the university halls made settling in easier. Sharing dinners and mingling with my fellow “hallies” helped me adapt to the new environment, and many of them became close friends.

The professors at Flinders, particularly in the Creative Arts and Visual Effects program, impressed me with their expertise. Learning from industry professionals was a game-changer, and the collaboration with CDW Studios was an incredible bonus. It gave me the opportunity to explore specialised topics, like Creature Design, that I wouldn’t have access to in Singapore. While pulling weekly all-nighters wasn’t easy, the intensity helped me develop the skills and resilience I need to thrive in the industry.

Flinders University has so much to offer. The facilities are top-notch, the professors are patient and understanding, and the lessons are recorded—a lifesaver for reviewing technical steps. The campus itself prioritises student well-being, with weekly events and resources like the Oasis, where students can grab free bread, vegetables, and affordable food every Thursday. This extra support meant I could save on groceries and splurge on other activities in Australia.

During the two-week break, I travelled to Sydney and Melbourne with friends, and it was an absolute blast! From staying in a capsule hotel in Sydney to riding Melbourne’s scenic trains, every moment felt unique. Walking over 20,000 steps a day exploring Bondi and Manly beaches was a first for me, and the breathtaking views were worth every step.

Adelaide may not have the hustle and bustle of bigger cities like Sydney or Melbourne, but its peaceful environment and stunning scenery make it the perfect place for focused work and relaxation. Despite its quieter pace, the city offers plenty of activities, with the university and halls organising weekly events to keep students engaged. Known as the “20-minute city,” Adelaide’s convenient public transport makes it easy to get around.

Would I come back if I had the chance? Absolutely. Would I recommend Flinders? Without a doubt. Thank you, Adelaide, for the unforgettable memories—see you again in the future!

Bryan was fortunate to be awarded a Destination Australia Cheung Kong Exchange Program Scholarship to support his exchange experience.
