{"id":1596,"date":"2019-04-25T08:00:33","date_gmt":"2019-04-24T22:30:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/?p=1596"},"modified":"2019-04-16T16:47:11","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T07:17:11","slug":"international-guide-dog-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/2019\/04\/25\/international-guide-dog-day\/","title":{"rendered":"International Guide Dog Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>25th April is International Guide Dog day<\/strong> and today we would like to give a shout out to all those students and staff who have their own Guide Dog, or who train them on our beautiful campus.<\/p>\n<p>Some fun facts about these furry service animals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Intelligent Disobedience:<\/strong> If an owner tells their dog to cross the road, and it is not safe to cross, the Guide Dog will disobey their owner to keep them safe.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Overhead Awareness:<\/strong> A Guide Dog is aware of overhanging branches and obstacles which might hit their owner. They will guide their owner around any obstacles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Off Duty:<\/strong> A Guide dog knows that when their working harness is off, they are off duty and can socialise, relax and play.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Retirement:<\/strong> Guide Dog\u2019s usually retire around the age of 10 or 11 years old.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Law:<\/strong> Guide Dog\u2019s are legally allowed almost anywhere: in Ubers, taxis, restaurants, shopping centres and cinemas.
