{"id":1881,"date":"2025-05-09T09:00:29","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T23:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/?p=1881"},"modified":"2026-06-15T11:48:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T02:18:17","slug":"self-care-mega-guide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/2025\/05\/09\/self-care-mega-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"The Self-care Mega Guide (2026)"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been collecting self-care strategies for a while now and the current home for them is my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fi\/3os10nvkyg2razqs3qw3s\/Self-Care-Mega-Guide.pdf?rlkey=x693fl6yl6luzex07wscficyh&amp;dl=0\">Self-care Mega Guide<\/a>. There is a lot in there and it keeps growing. I don&#8217;t expect people to follow all the advice in the guide. Instead I hope to alert people to the range of things that constitute self-care and consider activating a couple in their own life. <em>Last updated 15\/6\/26.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The history of the Self-care Mega Guide stretches back to 2018, when I released my first version.\u00a0The purpose of that guide (and all subsequent versions) was to alert students to the diverse range of activities that constitute self-care.<\/p>\n<p>Most of us have been told at some point in time that self-care is important. But that doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean we&#8217;ve been instructed on why that is and what self-care actually involves.<\/p>\n<p>At its simplest, self-care is often reduced down to eat well, move regularly, sleep soundly, stress less and be social. And to be honest, that isn&#8217;t the worst summary of self-care.<\/p>\n<p>But in practice, there are lots of ways that we can make investments in ourselves.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;Self-care is any deliberate\/intentional activity we do to look after or improve our physical, intellectual, mental, social, spiritual, financial or environmental wellbeing.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That is where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fi\/3os10nvkyg2razqs3qw3s\/Self-Care-Mega-Guide.pdf?rlkey=x693fl6yl6luzex07wscficyh&amp;dl=0\">Mega Guide<\/a> comes in.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5075\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2023\/06\/sky-mission.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2023\/06\/sky-mission.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2023\/06\/sky-mission-300x75.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2023\/06\/sky-mission-768x192.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2023\/06\/sky-mission-1024x256.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been on a bit of a mission to document and categorise, as best I can, the various activities I think fall into the self-care space.<\/p>\n<p>That mission has led to a sizeable document, with many strategies and ideas listed within. Hence the name &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fi\/60orw8m1mpimam1uvdbrb\/Self-Care-Mega-Guide-2025.pdf?rlkey=5hmd40w5rgnfdmibu5r4csfdk&amp;dl=0\">Mega Guide<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>I maintain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fi\/3os10nvkyg2razqs3qw3s\/Self-Care-Mega-Guide.pdf?rlkey=x693fl6yl6luzex07wscficyh&amp;dl=0\">this guide<\/a> and distribute it to students on the basis that I want you to be both happy and productive. That may sound a little naff but I want for you the same thing I want for all the people in my life that I care about. I want you to have a life filled with meaning and purpose and good relationships and enjoyable and productive work. The guide is intended to literally &#8216;guide&#8217; you towards those activities I think maximise the likelihood of that happening.<\/p>\n<p>At present, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fi\/60orw8m1mpimam1uvdbrb\/Self-Care-Mega-Guide-2025.pdf?rlkey=5hmd40w5rgnfdmibu5r4csfdk&amp;dl=0\">guide<\/a> covers 12 self-care strategy areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>advanced study skills<\/li>\n<li>building positive emotions<\/li>\n<li>managing challenging emotions<\/li>\n<li>becoming a better thinker<\/li>\n<li>developing self-awareness and understanding<\/li>\n<li>searching for meaning, purpose and identity<\/li>\n<li>building and maintaining supportive relationships<\/li>\n<li>caring for your body<\/li>\n<li>modifying your environment<\/li>\n<li>financial control<\/li>\n<li>unwinding and recharging<\/li>\n<li>helping others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I think of it as a series of starting points you might consider if you&#8217;ve made the decision to try and work on yourself or your life.<\/p>\n<p>It also contains a section on self-care during difficult times, for when you are confronted by a life challenge that is overwhelming.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, it links to our<a href=\"https:\/\/students.flinders.edu.au\/content\/dam\/student\/documents\/hcds-service-brochure.pdf\"> Service Brochure<\/a>, so you can learn more about the support resources, programs and services we offer here at <a href=\"https:\/\/students.flinders.edu.au\/content\/dam\/student\/documents\/hcds-service-brochure.pdf\">Health, Counselling and Disability Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Guide is an ongoing work in progress, meaning that I am always adding to it. I suggest just following through on 1 or 2 at a time and build slowly. You have your whole life to work out what constitutes the right mix of activities for you.
