{"id":3146,"date":"2025-10-28T09:00:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T22:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/?p=3146"},"modified":"2025-10-28T12:17:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T01:47:24","slug":"achieving-the-psychological-state-of-flow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/2025\/10\/28\/achieving-the-psychological-state-of-flow\/","title":{"rendered":"Achieving the psychological state of flow"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many of you will have heard of &#8216;flow states&#8217; &#8211; that feeling of being in the zone where we are really focused and productive. In this post, I explore some of the things you can do to increase the likelihood of entering a flow state. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Back in 2020, I sat down with Lauren, creator and star of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-news\/category\/like-a-boss\/\">Like A Boss<\/a>\u2019 series (which still holds up really well and is worth a look) to talk about how one <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-news\/2020\/10\/20\/719\/\">prepares oneself for the busy periods of the year<\/a> (for students, it is the period leading into exams).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We covered a lot of territory and you can see the conversation <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-news\/2020\/10\/20\/719\/\">here<\/a>, but I wanted to focus this blog post on one of the topics we spoke about &#8211;<strong> finding flow.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flow is a state first described and researched by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. You can watch him talk about the concept here:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi: Flow, the secret to happiness\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fXIeFJCqsPs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another term to describe the state is being in \u2018the zone\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When someone is in flow, they are intensely focused and concentrated on the task at hand, they become less self-conscious, they feel more in control, they tend to lose time. It is a state of total immersion where the border between the task and one\u2019s awareness disappears.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is a desirable state for a number of reasons. It is associated with increases in happiness, creativity, productivity, and means a person is more likely to re-engage with the activity in the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sounds just right for study and exam preparation and assignment production right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4149\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2020\/11\/flow-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>So how does one create a flow state?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although the state of flow has been well described, the mechanics of getting oneself in a state of flow seems more experimental than well defined.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That being said, there are some things that are reliably described as <\/span><b>increasing the chances<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of achieving a flow state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>1. Choose activities that you enjoy and\/or are meaningful to you<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Achieving flow is often described in the context of productivity &#8211; i.e. achieving faster or more efficient work. But flow research actually has its origins in understanding happiness. Flow is a state of high wellbeing and contentment and arises when people are immersed in the activities that bring them the most joy and meaning.<\/p>\n<p>Thus trying to achieve flow states when focused on work that may not elicit much enjoyment is a tough context in which to practice getting in flow states. You are better to focus on activities that you enjoy whilst honing your ability to achieve focused states of immersion. Once you can reliably elicit flow states for desired activities, you can start utilising some of the same strategies to achieve focus during important but perhaps less rewarding activities.<\/p>\n<p>For students this means practising flow state elicitation for enjoyable tasks first before applying it to study tasks (well at least the ones that you don&#8217;t enjoy as much).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2. Be specific about the task you are sitting down to do<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make sure the task you are sitting down to do is clearly defined &#8211; i.e. there is a clear goal and a clear metric of success. So instead of saying \u201cI\u2019m going to study for exams\u201d, you might instead say \u201cI\u2019m going to gather together all the readings for the topic in the one folder and read the first one and make notes\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Being specific about the task makes it easier to track whether you are succeeding in your efforts. For example, \u201ctake notes from Chapter 3\u201d isn\u2019t too bad because it is clear about the content (Chapter 3) and activity (take notes). However you could make this even more specific- \u201cwrite down the top 10 most interesting facts from Chapter 3\u201d. That contains the content (Chapter 3), the activity (write down) and an end-point (10 facts).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also, notice that I used the term \u2018task\u2019 instead of \u2018tasks\u2019. Flow is harder to achieve when we are attempting to multitask. Carve up bigger tasks into more achievable chunks<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flow is typically achieved when doing tasks that are just at the edge of one\u2019s abilities. If the task is too easy, you lose interest. If the task is too difficult you might get discouraged. You need to try and match the difficulty of the task to your current skill level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In practice this generally means breaking up big overwhelming tasks (e.g. \u2018study for exams\u2019) into more achievable chunks. This is closely related to the \u201cbe specific\u2026\u201d component described above.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So \u201cstudy for the psychology exam\u201d ends up becoming a coordinated set of small tasks:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chapter 7 &#8211; notes and flashcards<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chapter 10 &#8211; notes and flashcards<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Study group &#8211; testing each other on Chapter 3<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2026.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is a really good strategy to remember when you are sitting down to a task and feeling overwhelmed by the difficulty of it. Remind yourself to carve off a manageable chunk first to get started.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>4. Ensure there is some system of feedback involved<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Feedback allows us to see that we are making progress. It can also help us adjust our efforts if the feedback suggests we are going off path.<\/p>\n<p>Not all tasks support easy feedback. But even just seeing words on a page, lines on an artwork, \u2714 on a to-do list, photos of objects made can help quantify our output and provide indications of progress.<\/p>\n<p>Study is generally well suited to embedding feedback. You can track which readings you&#8217;ve done, self-test on multiple-choice, prepare flash cards, count words etc.<\/p>\n<p>Essentially you are after some system, no matter how simple, to show in real-time that you are moving forward on the task.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4151\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2020\/11\/flow-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2020\/11\/flow-3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2020\/11\/flow-3-300x50.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2020\/11\/flow-3-768x128.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2020\/11\/flow-3-1024x171.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>5. Work in biological peak times<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Chronotypes are variations between individuals in their patterns of rest and wakefulness. &#8216;Morning larks&#8217; are most alert in the morning. &#8216;Night owls&#8217; are most alert in the evenings. You&#8217;ve probably noticed differences in yourself across the day as to when you are most\/least alert.<\/p>\n<p>Entering into flow states is likely to be easier at times of the day when we are most alert, so you might want to focus your flow experiments during times of highest alertness.<\/p>\n<p>For me that is the morning. I find it easier to do extended periods of immersed work in the first half of the day, with my capacity fading into the evening.<\/p>\n<p>When are you at your most alert?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">6. Remove distractions<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flow is an intensely focused state in which the rest of the world seems to drop away, including all those pesky thoughts about self. You can assist this process by removing from your work environment the key things that are likely to distract you or bring you back to a state of self-awareness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other people<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Loud, unusual and\/or unpredictable sounds<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Social media and other distracting websites<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mobile phone notifications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Powerful smells (hopefully not you)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Multi-tasking (e.g. trying to do other tasks at the same time)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But it also means not being hungry or thirsty or tired or wearing uncomfortable clothes. Flow states are more likely when you are refreshed, well slept and alert.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Essentially you are trying to reduce the number of things that could feasibly take your attention away from the task at hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One potential contradiction to this might be music\/sound. Some people find some kinds of music\/background sounds to help with concentration. I use <a href=\"https:\/\/my.brain.fm\/\">BrainFM<\/a> which I find to be quite helpful for creating a relatively relaxed state of focus. It is hard to say if that is a placebo effect or a genuine modulation of brainwaves.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4152\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2020\/11\/flow-5.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">7. Try to elicit a positive mood going into the task<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We generally learn better when in a positive state of mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now, it isn\u2019t always possible to go into one\u2019s studies in a good mood. Our emotions are subject to many forces, some of which are out of our control. And I certainly don\u2019t want people thinking that they can\u2019t work unless they are in a good mood. I get plenty of work done, often in foul moods (as anyone who was around me when I was studying psychology).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But if possible, it is worth trying to elicit a neutral or positive mood state as you head into the task in which you want to achieve flow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This might involve:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A brief meditation before starting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Making yourself a cup of tea or coffee<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Doing a bit of physical activity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spending a bit of time in nature or firing up some nature sounds<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seeing if you can put aside any negative self-talk<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Acknowledging but politely rejecting any\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fears about failure or not being good enough that pop up<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Negative evaluations of the task itself<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thoughts that you don\u2019t have some control in the situation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some slow breathing exercises<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You don\u2019t need to aim for giddy levels of joy. Maybe just a state of calm or readiness or equanimity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is worth noting that these mild mood boosts might counter the fact that in the early stages of tackling a difficult task, we are more likely to feel agitated, confused and annoyed (see next point).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>8. Push through the struggle phase<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In a podcast by neuroscientist Andrew Huberman, he described the early stages (15-20 minutes) of a period of focused work as feeling uncomfortable because of the release of certain biochemical associated with arousal and pursuit such as adrenaline and cortisol.<\/p>\n<p>It takes a while before neurotransmitters like dopamine which act more like rewards are present.<\/p>\n<p>In the Studyology program we show students this chart:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4148\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2020\/11\/Picture1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2020\/11\/Picture1.png 800w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2020\/11\/Picture1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2020\/11\/Picture1-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It shows that stress levels need to increase significantly before we reach optimal performance levels. Sometimes we interpret those stress sensations as a sign something is wrong, but in fact, its a natural part of the entry into optimal productivity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">9. Emphasise learning over task achievement<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rather than just phrasing tasks as \u2018things I need to get done\u2019, try to dig in a little further and think about what that task will actually help you achieve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is the difference between saying<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI am going to read Chapter 11 and take notes\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI am going to read Chapter 11, take some notes and get a firm understanding of liquid dynamics\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remember, each time you sit down to do a task at University, you are acquiring knowledge and skills that will be important at some point down the track and that make you a smarter and more capable individual.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Often we just view university tasks as something we need to do to get a good grade. And whilst grades are important, they aren\u2019t actually the knowledge and skills we will be using in our life. Remember that\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This focus on the bigger picture of what we are learning can make it easier to stick with and get engaged in tasks. We become more mindful of what it is we are learning at a deeper level.\u00a0 We imbue what we are learning with more meaning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4153\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2020\/11\/flow-4.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">10. Set a timer<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rather than focusing on the time (which can end up being a distraction), simply set yourself a goal of working for a predefined amount of time (I like 40 minutes) and set a timer to go off when that time has elapsed. You can put \u2018timer\u2019 into Google search and it will give you a basic timer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A timer is also a useful reminder to not try and engage with any other activities during the timed period. \u201cFor the next 40 minutes, I am going to focus solely on this blog article\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve heard varying opinions on optimal work times ranging from 20 minutes through to 90 minutes. I tend to err on the side of slightly longer work times, because it often takes 15-20 minutes to really get any early traction on a difficult task, so I tend to organise my work times in blocks of around 60-90 minutes. You may need to experiment to see what works best for you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">11. Practice getting in flow states with enjoyable activities<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is really just a re-iteration of point #1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I find that I am more likely to achieve flow states when working on stuff that I enjoy versus activities I find a little dry or boring. So it is more likely to happen when I am doing art versus administrative work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So why not practice trying to achieve the state when doing enjoyable tasks?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once you get familiar with the psychological state itself, you might then be able to return to it easier with less interesting tasks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is the same idea as getting people to practice relaxation techniques regularly, so they get familiar with what it feels like to be \u2018relaxed\u2019, and they can more easily return to that state during periods of high distress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>But Gareth, 11 possible triggers isn&#8217;t enough for me!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well OK then! Greedy much?<\/p>\n<p>I recently found this Steven Kotler article <em data-start=\"24\" data-end=\"84\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flowresearchcollective.com\/blog\/flow-triggers\">What Are Flow Triggers? 22 Examples to Unlock Flow State<\/a>\u201d<\/em>. He describes 22 triggers, divided into\u00a0four categories: <strong data-start=\"351\" data-end=\"363\">internal<\/strong> (psychological factors like clear goals, curiosity, and the right balance between challenge and skill), <strong data-start=\"468\" data-end=\"480\">external<\/strong> (environmental conditions such as novelty, risk, or deep embodiment), <strong data-start=\"551\" data-end=\"563\">creative<\/strong> (the brain\u2019s pattern-recognition and idea-linking processes), and <strong data-start=\"630\" data-end=\"639\">group<\/strong> (team dynamics like shared goals, equal participation, and open communication).<\/p>\n<p>The first 3: internal, external and creative all relate to things you could utilise on your own. The fourth (group) refers to dynamics that foster flow in groups.<\/p>\n<p>Wrangling 22 triggers seems hard, so I wondered if perhaps a recipe approach made sense.<\/p>\n<p>If you are working on your own, pick one strategy from each of internal, external and creative and create a recipe for any given study session.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"239\">\n<p data-start=\"3\" data-end=\"239\"><strong data-start=\"3\" data-end=\"24\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The Focus Sprint:<\/strong> Set a clear, specific study goal <em data-start=\"58\" data-end=\"70\">(internal)<\/em>, remove all distractions and work in short, timed bursts <em data-start=\"128\" data-end=\"140\">(external)<\/em>, and look for patterns or links between what you\u2019re learning and previous material <em data-start=\"224\" data-end=\"237\">(creative).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"241\" data-end=\"475\">\n<p data-start=\"244\" data-end=\"475\"><strong data-start=\"244\" data-end=\"272\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The Curiosity Kickstart:<\/strong> Begin with one genuine question you want answered <em data-start=\"323\" data-end=\"335\">(internal)<\/em>, change your study location or setup for a fresh feel <em data-start=\"390\" data-end=\"402\">(external)<\/em>, and summarise new insights in your own words or visuals <em data-start=\"460\" data-end=\"473\">(creative).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"477\" data-end=\"715\" data-is-last-node=\"\">\n<p data-start=\"480\" data-end=\"715\" data-is-last-node=\"\"><strong data-start=\"480\" data-end=\"507\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The Confidence Builder:<\/strong> Choose a task that slightly stretches your ability <em data-start=\"559\" data-end=\"571\">(internal)<\/em>, use a quiz or rubric to get immediate feedback <em data-start=\"620\" data-end=\"632\">(external)<\/em>, and reframe mistakes as useful data for refining your understanding <em data-start=\"702\" data-end=\"715\" data-is-last-node=\"\">(creative).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are working in a group, you can add an additional element to utilise group dynamics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"287\">\n<p data-start=\"3\" data-end=\"287\"><strong data-start=\"3\" data-end=\"29\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The Team Flow Builder:<\/strong> Agree on clear shared goals and roles <em data-start=\"68\" data-end=\"80\">(internal)<\/em>, meet in a focused, interruption-free space <em data-start=\"125\" data-end=\"137\">(external)<\/em>, brainstorm using \u201cyes, and\u2026\u201d to build on ideas <em data-start=\"186\" data-end=\"198\">(creative)<\/em>, and keep communication open and respectful so everyone contributes equally <em data-start=\"275\" data-end=\"285\">(group).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"289\" data-end=\"608\">\n<p data-start=\"292\" data-end=\"608\"><strong data-start=\"292\" data-end=\"313\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The Study Circle:<\/strong> Arrive curious, each bringing one question or challenge to explore <em data-start=\"381\" data-end=\"393\">(internal)<\/em>, use a consistent time and place that feels familiar <em data-start=\"447\" data-end=\"459\">(external)<\/em>, connect different perspectives to uncover shared patterns <em data-start=\"519\" data-end=\"531\">(creative)<\/em>, and make sure airtime is evenly shared so every voice is heard <em data-start=\"596\" data-end=\"606\">(group).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"610\" data-end=\"976\" data-is-last-node=\"\">\n<p data-start=\"613\" data-end=\"976\" data-is-last-node=\"\"><strong data-start=\"613\" data-end=\"639\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The Presentation Crew:<\/strong> Anchor your motivation in the purpose of communicating ideas clearly <em data-start=\"709\" data-end=\"721\">(internal)<\/em>, rehearse together in the actual space or setting you\u2019ll present in <em data-start=\"790\" data-end=\"802\">(external)<\/em>, experiment with visuals or storytelling to make content engaging <em data-start=\"869\" data-end=\"881\">(creative)<\/em>, and focus on \u201cour success\u201d rather than \u201cmy part\u201d to blend egos and boost team flow <em data-start=\"966\" data-end=\"976\" data-is-last-node=\"\">(group).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you need to be in flow to do good work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No, you do not, which is good because I don\u2019t think I spend a great deal of time in flow, especially when I am working on tasks that I don\u2019t really enjoy. I tend to spend a lot of time slightly distracted or switching between tasks. I checked my email multiple times whilst writing this blog post.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I believe that flow is a state worth pursuing, but not relentlessly to the detriment of just sitting down and doing the work. There are some days where I (we) just have to accept that I am likely to be easily distracted, but if I keep bringing myself back to the things I need to do, I will still get some good work done. This means you still need to pay attention to allocating sufficient time to getting tasks done. You can\u2019t guarantee that you\u2019ll just be able to drop into a flow state on command.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flow is not necessary for getting stuff done, but it can increase one\u2019s engagement with work, improve the experience of work and help achieve greater productivity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How will I know if I have achieved flow?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We don\u2019t tend to be aware we are in a flow state, when we are in it, because much of that self-questioning and self-awareness kinda disappears during a flow state. It is why you don\u2019t see many sports stars loudly exclaiming \u2018i\u2019m in the zone!\u201d &#8211; such self-awareness would likely indicate the opposite.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are more likely to realise afterwards that we were in a flow state, when we emerge from an intense period of concentration and focus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It feels a bit like waking up after a daydream.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This has implications for achieving flow states.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can\u2019t really just will yourself into a flow state. Instead you need to set up the necessary conditions for a flow state to emerge (see suggestions above) and be open to it happening if it does, but accepting if it doesn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How long does flow last?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is a bit like \u2018how long is a piece of string?\u2019 but I do notice that people often have the perception that a flow state lasts hours and hours. They have an expectation of being able to do a mammoth 8-hour study session without distraction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In my experience, flow states can range from a few minutes, through to a couple of hours maximum.
