{"id":3640,"date":"2021-08-12T09:34:58","date_gmt":"2021-08-12T00:04:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/?p=3640"},"modified":"2022-02-21T11:38:05","modified_gmt":"2022-02-21T01:08:05","slug":"making-the-most-out-of-your-telehealth-appointment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/2021\/08\/12\/making-the-most-out-of-your-telehealth-appointment\/","title":{"rendered":"How to get the most out of your telehealth appointment \ud83d\udcde"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since COVID-19, the team at Health, Counselling and Disability Services have been providing many more appointments via telehealth, namely telephone, Skype, Teams, Zoom, webex etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As someone who has received therapy before, including telehealth, I know that the experience of seeing someone via telehealth is quite different to face-to-face (f2f) .\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The literature on the topic suggests that whilst the experience is different, you don\u2019t lose anything therapeutically from shifting from f2f to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0165032719319743\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">telephone <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/2021\/05\/04\/therapy-via-teleconferencing-is-as-good\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">videoconference.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The change in mode doesn\u2019t make it less effective or therapeutic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But the shift in mode <\/span><b>does <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">require some adaptation from both the therapist and the client. In fact, both the therapist and the client have a role to play in making sure that telehealth appointments go well and are useful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At our end, it means ensuring we communicate clearly the time\/date of your appointment and how we will contact you, that we have a reliable connection (internet or phone reception), that our equipment is high quality so we can be seen and heard clearly, that we articulate ourselves well, that we use different methods to attune to your feelings and we check in more regularly during the session on how you are going and feeling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>But what about you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What can you do at your end to make a telehealth appointment (particularly a counselling or disability one) go better so that you get more out of the process?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>M<\/strong>ake sure you put the appointment in your calendar\/diary so you know it is happening \ud83d\udcc5<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>S<\/strong>tay tuned to your SMS for any updates on the appointment. Please reply Y if going ahead with the appointment or N if you need to cancel \ud83d\udcf1<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>B<\/strong>e ready for the call at least 10 minutes beforehand \u231a\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>T<\/strong>hink about what you need to ask and what you want to share. If it helps, write it down in a short list. Writing down what you want to cover in the appointment can be very helpful if you experience some strong emotions during the appointment. \u270d\ud83c\udffc<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>M<\/strong>ake sure your device (phone, laptop, desktop) is charged and ready to go \ud83d\udcbb\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>D<\/strong>o a test run with a friend to make sure any equipment\/software you are using is working OK \ud83e\uddd1\ud83c\udffc\u260e\ud83d\udc69\ud83c\udffe\u200d\ud83e\uddb1<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>E<\/strong>nsure you are in a location with good reception (phone) and\/or good internet and lighting (for video chats).\ud83d\udcf6<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>U<\/strong>se headphones to improve sound quality and also improve privacy \ud83c\udfa7<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>M<\/strong>ake sure you are in a quiet, private and comfortable place. Use a \u2018do not disturb\u2019 sign if needed. You want to be in a space where you feel you can speak openly and honestly and not be concerned about someone listening in or noticing your emotional reactions.\ud83e\udd2b<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>H<\/strong>ave some water, tissues, pen and paper close to hand. Take notes if concepts come up that you think you should remember. \ud83e\udd5b \ud83d\udcdc<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>R<\/strong>emember that depending on the format (e.g. phone) the counsellor\/therapist might not be able to as easily read your emotional state, so try to articulate your situation as clearly as possible (this is helpful regardless of therapy mode to be honest). \ud83d\udde3<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>L<\/strong>et your therapist know if their signal (video, audio) is not very good so they can adjust or call your back. \ud83d\udce1\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>I<\/strong>f video chat is offered, consider saying yes or at least giving it a go. Whilst people are often a little more uncomfortable doing video chat, there are benefits in terms of being able to see the therapist as well as using the other video features (e.g. sharing documents, links, sharing screen etc).
