{"id":7164,"date":"2026-01-20T09:19:30","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T22:49:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/?p=7164"},"modified":"2026-01-20T09:20:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T22:50:27","slug":"just-begin-again-methods-for-unstucking-your-studies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/2026\/01\/20\/just-begin-again-methods-for-unstucking-your-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Just Begin Again &#8211; Methods for Unstucking Your Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Yes, unstucking is a word and I don&#8217;t apologise for it at all.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p data-start=\"150\" data-end=\"215\">I\u2019ve been meditating fairly consistently for the last few months (send your congratulatory emails to <a href=\"mailto:gareth.furber@flinders.edu.au\">gareth.furber@flinders.edu.au<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"217\" data-end=\"316\">One instruction that comes up again and again in meditation is simply this: <strong data-start=\"293\" data-end=\"316\">\u201cJust begin again.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"318\" data-end=\"586\">It\u2019s a useful reminder, because there are lots of ways to get <em>stuck<\/em> while meditating. You get lost in thought. You start chasing a particular feeling. You judge how well or badly you think it\u2019s going. And before you know it, you&#8217;ve descended into thinking quicksand.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"588\" data-end=\"731\">\u201cJust begin again\u201d is a gentle reset. In meditation terms, it often means nothing more complicated than returning your attention to the breath.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"733\" data-end=\"854\">Study, work, and university life have their own versions of these traps. We develop bad study habits. We don&#8217;t manage our time well. Our attendance starts to wane. Our coffee intake reaches levels discouraged by medical professionals.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"733\" data-end=\"854\">We all fall into them. There\u2019s no shame in that.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"856\" data-end=\"946\">And just like in meditation, there are plenty of moments where you can simply begin again.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"856\" data-end=\"946\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7176\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/1-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/1-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/1-768x384.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"948\" data-end=\"1100\">Maybe you\u2019re just joining us at Flinders, having made a big life transition from school, work, or somewhere else entirely. That\u2019s a genuine fresh start.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1102\" data-end=\"1260\">Maybe you\u2019re returning for your second or third year of a degree, or continuing with Honours or a PhD. The start of a new year still offers a chance to reset.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1262\" data-end=\"1312\">But it\u2019s not just the start of a year that counts.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1551\">Opportunities for <strong>fresh starts<\/strong> show up all the time: a new semester, the start of the month, the end of the month, a birthday, even a random Monday.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1551\">And look, not all fresh starts go well. I&#8217;d be horrified if I attempted to count the number of times that I said to myself &#8216;I&#8217;ll start &#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;. better on Monday&#8217; and then failed to do so.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1551\">So there is a value in thinking about how to make a fresh start a more successful start.\u00a0And I have contemplated this topic many times.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1551\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7177\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/2-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/2-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/01\/2-768x384.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1551\">For the last few years I have worked on a &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/2024\/11\/27\/getting-off-to-a-good-start-guide-introduction\/\">Getting Off To A Good Start<\/a>&#8216; guide, intended for those joining us during orientation. The intention of that guide was sound (guide new students towards good choices) but it has got a bit bloated and disorganised over time.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1551\">Recently, with the help of AI, we pulled apart that article to try and extract a smaller more actionable set of good ideas. Instead of focusing on individual pieces of advice, we looked for thematic actions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1913\" data-end=\"2140\">What we found were ten simple verbs \u2014 ten different ways a person can better activate a fresh start. Yes, ten is a very convenient number and I&#8217;m confident AI does like even numbers, Regardless, each is a different kind of move you can make.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2142\" data-end=\"2235\">Some are very practical. Some are reflective. Some involve action. Clicking is about direct engagement: logging into your topics, reading the emails you\u2019ve been sent, opening the orientation or topic pages you\u2019ve been pointed toward, and visiting relevant support sites. It\u2019s not glamorous, but it\u2019s grounding and you are more likely than not to discover something interesting if you do. This doesn\u2019t have to be big. It can be as small as saying hi to someone in a lecture, replying to a discussion post, or sitting near others while you study in a non-creepy way. It can also be more intentional, like joining a club, attending an event, or taking on a small responsibility such as being a student rep. Feeling even loosely connected makes effort easier to sustain.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"977\" data-end=\"1048\">\n<p data-start=\"980\" data-end=\"1048\">Say hi to the person sitting next to you in a lecture or tutorial.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1049\" data-end=\"1133\">\n<p data-start=\"1052\" data-end=\"1133\">Ask or answer one question in a tutorial, workshop, or online discussion space. Oh yeah and leave your camera on in online sessions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1201\">\n<p data-start=\"1137\" data-end=\"1201\">Message a classmate or study partner about the semester ahead and book your next study session.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1202\" data-end=\"1268\">\n<p data-start=\"1205\" data-end=\"1268\">Attend one <a href=\"https:\/\/students.flinders.edu.au\/orientation\">orientation<\/a> or early-semester event, even briefly.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1269\" data-end=\"1373\">\n<p data-start=\"1272\" data-end=\"1373\">Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/fusa.edu.au\/clubs\/\">clubs<\/a> page, pick one and join.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1559\"><strong data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1164\">Contemplate \ud83e\udd14<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1559\">Contemplation is the quiet step that often gets skipped. It\u2019s about slowing down enough to notice how things are actually going. That might mean reflecting on past learning experiences, identifying what worked well, or naming one or two things you want to do differently this time. For starting the year well, contemplation is less about overthinking and more about setting a clear intention.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1416\" data-end=\"1501\">\n<p data-start=\"1419\" data-end=\"1501\">Think about what worked well for you in previous study or work settings and why.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1502\" data-end=\"1596\">\n<p data-start=\"1505\" data-end=\"1596\">Identify one thing that didn\u2019t work so well last time and what you might try differently.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1597\" data-end=\"1667\">\n<p data-start=\"1600\" data-end=\"1667\">Ask yourself: <em data-start=\"1614\" data-end=\"1665\">What do I want this year or semester to be about?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1668\" data-end=\"1777\">\n<p data-start=\"1671\" data-end=\"1777\">Notice how you\u2019re feeling about the year ahead \u2014 excited, anxious, flat, motivated \u2014 without judging it.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1778\" data-end=\"1850\">\n<p data-start=\"1781\" data-end=\"1850\">Set aside a small block of time in the day for formal meditation\/contemplation. It involves taking your time seriously: putting assessment due dates into a calendar, scheduling lectures and tutorials, allocating study time, and accounting for work, family, and other commitments. This is one of the strongest \u201cwellbeing\u201d moves you can make because it reduces cognitive load and uncertainty. When your time is visible, it becomes manageable.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1890\" data-end=\"1966\">\n<p data-start=\"1893\" data-end=\"1966\">Put all known assessment due dates into your diary or digital calendar.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1967\" data-end=\"2041\">\n<p data-start=\"1970\" data-end=\"2041\">Schedule your lectures and tutorials so they\u2019re visible week to week.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2042\" data-end=\"2118\">\n<p data-start=\"2045\" data-end=\"2118\">Block out regular study time, even if it\u2019s just a rough starting point. For a full-time schedule, try to set aside 36 hours in a week (including lectures and tutorials) as a starting point.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2119\" data-end=\"2207\">\n<p data-start=\"2122\" data-end=\"2207\">Add work shifts, placements, family commitments, or travel time into your calendar so you have a better sense of what time is free for study.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2208\" data-end=\"2274\">\n<p data-start=\"2211\" data-end=\"2274\">Write down the next concrete task you need to do for one topic.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1986\" data-end=\"2387\"><strong data-start=\"1986\" data-end=\"1992\">Do \u25b6\ufe0f<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1986\" data-end=\"2387\">Doing is about changing the moment you\u2019re in. It\u2019s the immediate call to action \u2014 choosing one small, value-consistent step and taking it now. Sometimes that might even mean stopping reading this post and starting something else. This is similar to the idea of a choice point: asking yourself, \u201cWhat would be a helpful move right now?\u201d Momentum often follows action, not the other way around.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"2308\" data-end=\"2361\">\n<p data-start=\"2311\" data-end=\"2361\">Spend 10 minutes setting up a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/2024\/02\/26\/create-study-space-makes-want-study\/\">basic study space<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2362\" data-end=\"2428\">\n<p data-start=\"2365\" data-end=\"2428\">Start watching one lecture or reading one document right now.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2429\" data-end=\"2493\">\n<p data-start=\"2432\" data-end=\"2493\">Set a 5-minute timer and begin a task you\u2019ve been avoiding. [editor&#8217;s note: I generally go with 30 minutes instead, just because I find 5 minutes doesn&#8217;t go well with complex tasks]<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2494\" data-end=\"2576\">\n<p data-start=\"2497\" data-end=\"2576\">Reduce one distraction (close a tab, silence notifications, move your phone).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2577\" data-end=\"2655\">\n<p data-start=\"2580\" data-end=\"2655\">Take a short walk or stretch to reset your focus before returning to study.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2389\" data-end=\"2759\"><strong data-start=\"2389\" data-end=\"2402\">Self-talk \ud83d\udcad<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2389\" data-end=\"2759\">Self-talk is about deciding what kind of coach you want to be for yourself this year. Many of us default to a harsh, critical internal voice. A more helpful coach still wants you to do well and won\u2019t let you drift indefinitely but also doesn\u2019t turn nasty when things wobble. The way you talk to yourself shapes persistence far more than motivation does.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"2702\" data-end=\"2756\">\n<p data-start=\"2705\" data-end=\"2756\">Remind yourself: <em data-start=\"2722\" data-end=\"2754\">Confusion is part of learning.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2757\" data-end=\"2797\">\n<p data-start=\"2760\" data-end=\"2797\">Say: <em data-start=\"2765\" data-end=\"2795\">Done is better than perfect.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2798\" data-end=\"2885\">\n<p data-start=\"2801\" data-end=\"2885\">Notice when you\u2019re being harsh with yourself and soften the language you\u2019re using. Explore a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/2025\/10\/19\/take-self-compassion-break\/\">protocol for building self-compassion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2886\" data-end=\"2929\">\n<p data-start=\"2889\" data-end=\"2929\">Acknowledge effort, not just outcomes. In your diary, write down what you achieve in a day, not just what you have coming up.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2930\" data-end=\"3010\">\n<p data-start=\"2933\" data-end=\"3010\">Try speaking to yourself the way you would to a friend who wanted to do well.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2761\" data-end=\"3130\"><strong data-start=\"2761\" data-end=\"2771\">Decide \ud83c\udfaf<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2761\" data-end=\"3130\">Deciding comes into play when you\u2019re stuck hovering. It\u2019s for the moments of umming and ahhing, over-researching, or feeling paralysed by options. Deciding might mean choosing which subject to prioritise, which strategy to try first, what can wait, or when \u201cgood enough\u201d really is good enough. Rest includes sleep, breaks during the day, and moments of mental disengagement. It\u2019s not the opposite of productivity. It\u2019s what makes sustained effort possible.
