{"id":7339,"date":"2026-03-05T15:07:19","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T04:37:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/?p=7339"},"modified":"2026-03-05T15:07:19","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T04:37:19","slug":"supercommunicators-ended-up-a-non-event-but-alas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/2026\/03\/05\/supercommunicators-ended-up-a-non-event-but-alas\/","title":{"rendered":"Supercommunicators ended up a non-event, but alas&#8230;&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<p>Nothing will stop me communicating these communication skills to you!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you saw my previous post about the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/2026\/02\/26\/im-running-a-1hr-supercommunicators-workshop-at-city-campus-for-connect-week\/\">Supercommunicators Workshop<\/a> in the city, you are probably thinking &#8220;Damn, I missed that. It must have been huge!!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, however, it was a fizzer. No one showed up. No chance of Supercommunication, because well &#8230;.ummm&#8230;&#8230;there was no-one to communicate with!<\/p>\n<p>While that room was empty (and for a small period of time, my heart), the ideas I wanted to share in that workshop should not be held hostage. So, let&#8217;s give them space to roam in this post.<\/p>\n<p>The basic idea is this: we have multiple conversations a day, and good ones are central to our wellbeing. The good news is that it is within your power to make the next conversation you have a better one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In your next conversation today &#8211; whether it&#8217;s at the coffee shop, in a tutorial, or with a roommate &#8211; pick just one of these six skills to try out:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1. Prepare for the Conversation \ud83d\udcdd<\/p>\n<p><span data-path-to-node=\"6,1\"><span class=\"citation-432\">Before you even step into a conversation you know is coming up, create a game plan in your head. <\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"6,5\"><span class=\"citation-431\">Take a moment to think of <strong>two topics<\/strong> you might discuss, <strong>one thing<\/strong> you actually want to tell the other person, and <strong>one specific question<\/strong> you want to ask them<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"6,7\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"6,9\"><span class=\"citation-430\">It sounds simple, but having some pre-determined discussion points\/questions can help kill any mid-chat lulls and keep things flowing.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2. Transform a &#8220;Yes\/No&#8221; Question \u2753<\/p>\n<p><span data-path-to-node=\"8,1\"><span class=\"citation-429\">It\u2019s so easy to fall into asking &#8216;closed&#8217; questions like &#8220;Did you have a good weekend?&#8221; or &#8220;Do you like your degree?&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"8,3\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"8,5\"><span class=\"citation-428\">The problem is that these questions basically invite a one-word answer that ends the chat<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"8,7\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"8,9\"><span class=\"citation-427\">Instead, try transforming them into open-ended questions that give the other person room to share their experiences<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"8,11\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"8,13\"><span class=\"citation-426\">Ask things like &#8220;How did you spend your weekend?&#8221; or &#8220;How did you get interested in your degree?&#8221; and observe if it leads them to share more with you. Don&#8217;t fret if you catch yourself asking a closed question. Simply follow it up with an open one.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3. Go One Level Deeper \ud83c\udf0a<\/p>\n<p><span data-path-to-node=\"10,1\"><span class=\"citation-425\">Most of our daily talk is surface-level facts, but researchers have found that the most successful connections happen when we ask about deeper things like needs, goals, beliefs, and emotions<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"10,3\">. Of course, not every conversation requires deepening, but for those that involve actual or potential friends, instead <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"10,5\"><span class=\"citation-424\">of just asking &#8220;Where do you live?&#8221;, try asking &#8220;What do you like about living there?&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"10,7\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"10,9\"><span class=\"citation-423\">Moving from the &#8220;what&#8221; to the &#8220;how&#8221; or &#8220;why&#8221; gives people a chance to talk about what actually matters to them, which builds a much stronger bond than just swapping data points<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"10,11\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4. Match the Energy \ud83c\udfad<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\"><span data-path-to-node=\"12,1\"><span class=\"citation-422\">Supercommunicators are great at reading the emotion(s) of a person and matching them. <\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"12,1\"><span class=\"citation-422\">But reading specific emotions (especially across cultures can be difficult).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\">Instead, use this simpler method of reading their mood (positive or negative) and energy (high or low).<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/03\/match-mood.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7340\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/03\/match-mood.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/03\/match-mood.png 1280w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/03\/match-mood-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/03\/match-mood-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-health-and-well-being\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2026\/03\/match-mood-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"p-rc_7b8325e7d01c303d-182\" data-path-to-node=\"13\"><span data-path-to-node=\"13,1\"><span class=\"citation-421\">Is the person you\u2019re talking to high-energy and upbeat, or maybe low-energy and frustrated?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13\">Look to gently match their energy and mood, so they feel better seen and understood.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. Prove You Are Listening (The &#8220;Loop&#8221;) \ud83d\udc42<\/p>\n<p><span data-path-to-node=\"15,1\"><span class=\"citation-418\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ggia.berkeley.edu\/practice\/active_listening\">Active listening<\/a> is a term I hear a lot more these days. But what actually is it? It is type of listening that makes someone feel seen and valued, by clearly demonstrating that you are absorbing what they are saying. <\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"15,5\"><span class=\"citation-417\">The most effective way to do this is a move called &#8220;looping&#8221;: <em>ask a question, repeat or summarize what you just heard them say in your own words, and then check if you got it right by either asking outright (&#8220;Did I get that right?&#8221;) or noting their agreement or disagreement with your summary<\/em><\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"15,7\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"15,9\"><span class=\"citation-416\">It\u2019s a simple technique, but it\u2019s incredibly powerful for a) orienting you towards being a more attentive listener and b) building trust and ensuring the other person feels heard.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. Find the Overlap \ud83e\udd1d<\/p>\n<p><span data-path-to-node=\"17,1\"><span class=\"citation-415\">In a world where it\u2019s easy to focus on our differences, Supercommunicators look for common ground<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"17,3\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"17,5\"><span class=\"citation-414\">We all have complex &#8220;identity maps&#8221; &#8211; roles that we play in our lives (student, sibling, musician, lover of fine chocolate, environmentalist). W<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"17,9\"><span class=\"citation-413\">hen you find those shared roles or values, take a moment to double click on it and learn more about how that identity plays out in their life. A great technique for balancing conversations that might otherwise get difficult because of differing views in other areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Connection Experiment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Think of your next interaction as an experiment.<\/p>\n<p>Look, I won&#8217;t lie.
