I have been in Australia for a couple of years now.<\/p>\n<p>Moving to a new country and starting uni here hasn\u2019t always been easy. Sometimes it feels like everyone else is moving forward, while I\u2019m somehow stuck or falling behind.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m still figuring things out as I go, just like many of us. This article comes from those feelings and a reminder that maybe we\u2019re doing better than we think.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A question you might not say out loud<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>When was the last time you compared your life to someone else\u2019s timeline?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>What might change if you focused more on your own journey instead?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are some moments when everything around feels very quiet, but inside, it feels unexpectedly heavy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The \u201cperfect life abroad\u201d vs reality<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When I first came here, I imagined a kind of \u201cperfect\u201d life. I thought I could balance study and part-time work without too much difficulty.<\/p>\n<p>But the reality is different. Studying (especially in a language that I am still not fully confident with) already takes almost all of my time and energy. It becomes hard to manage anything else. And once I choose to work, it often means giving up the little time I have to rest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>When comparison quietly begins<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I believe many international students have felt something similar.<\/p>\n<p>After a long, exhausting day, you go back home, lie in bed, and open social media. You see friends back home starting jobs, getting promoted, entering new stages of life. It feels like everyone is moving forward in a steady and certain way.<\/p>\n<p>And you are still here: studying, adapting to a new life, still unsure about what comes next.<\/p>\n<p>In that moment, many thoughts suddenly fill your mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Did I really understand today\u2019s lecture?<\/li>\n<li>When is the next assignment due?<\/li>\n<li>Have I prepared enough for this week\u2019s rent?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The time that should be for rest quietly turns into time for checking, worrying, and dealing with small but endless responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>And when everything is finally done, and you lie down again, one thought always appears:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAm I falling behind?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter 1536px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Time pressure and \u201cfalling behind\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes, age can also become a source of anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>We often feel like there is a certain timeline we should follow \u2014 by a certain age, we should graduate, start working, and become stable.<\/p>\n<p>But because of studying abroad, changing majors, language programs, or taking time off, it becomes easy to feel:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI am slower than people my age.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cEveryone else seems to be moving forward, and I am still figuring things out.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7445\" 100vw, 1536px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>More than just one feeling<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For many international students, anxiety is not just one emotion \u2014 it is a combination of many things.<\/p>\n<p>It can be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>worrying that maybe this path is not worth it;<\/li>\n<li>feeling uncertain about the future \u2014 not sure if you can stay, and not sure where to go back;<\/li>\n<li>being surrounded by people, but still feeling a quiet sense of loneliness;<\/li>\n<li>missing home, but also feeling afraid of not fitting back into your old life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And in many quiet moments, you might ask yourself:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAm I really meant to be here?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A different path, not a slower one<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Instead of repeatedly asking whether you are falling behind, it might help to pause and ask: where does this feeling actually come from?<\/p>\n<p>For many international students, studying abroad already means choosing a different life path.<\/p>\n<p>We leave familiar environments, adapt to a new culture, and spend time growing, learning, and preparing ourselves before entering the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>This path is not always straight, and it is often uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>But just because it looks different from a \u201cstandard\u201d timeline doesn\u2019t mean it is behind.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, you may have already come much further than you realise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7446\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How social media makes it worse<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One small but important reminder: social media often makes this feeling stronger.<\/p>\n<p>People usually share their highlights \u2014 new jobs, achievements, moments worth celebrating. Rarely do they share confusion, exhaustion, anxiety, or self-doubt.<\/p>\n<p>But we easily compare our real, unfinished life with someone else\u2019s carefully presented \u201cbest moments.\u201d And over time, this kind of comparison can quietly shape how we see ourselves \u2014 making us feel like we are not doing enough, even when we are already trying our best.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly, this comparison turns into pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Age, progress, and life pace all become invisible standards we use to measure ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What progress really looks like<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Instead of asking again and again, \u201cAm I falling behind?\u201d, it may help to rethink what progress really means.<\/p>\n<p>For international students, progress is rarely something big or dramatic. It could also be something your friends back home don\u2019t experience \u2014 adapting to a new culture, becoming more independent, or navigating life on your own.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2<\/strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">. Reduce comparison triggers (especially social media)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Try to spend less time scrolling, especially when you already feel tired. Instead, find ways to rest that don\u2019t involve screens \u2014 like going for a walk, listening to music, or just sitting quietly for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3<\/strong>. <span style=\"color: #333399\">Talk to someone<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You are not alone in this. You might find support through student clubs, international student services (ISS), Oasis, or even friends from your own country. And it\u2019s okay to connect with people who share similar backgrounds \u2014 you are all going through something similar.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>4<\/strong>.<span style=\"color: #333399\"> Share your experience<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, sharing your story can also help others feel less alone.
