Avoiding Employment Scams

Keeping You Safe – A Cyber Security Series

University students are prime targets for employment scams, as they are often new to the workforce, unfamiliar with hiring practices, and are looking online for jobs with flexibility.

Task-based scams involve simple tasks like product reviews but soon require you to transfer money or cryptocurrency to unlock further tasks. Up-front fee scams request payment for application processing, visas or training, then disappear once they receive your money or personal details. Money mule scams ask you to receive and transfer money, laundering those funds for criminals.

What To Look For

  • Jobs offering high pay for little effort or up-front payments from you to get started.
  • Recruiters contacting you on encrypted messaging apps such as WhatsApp.
  • Job offers without interviews or reference checks.
