What is Multi-Factor Authentication?

Keeping You Safe – A Cyber Security Series

What is MFA?

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a security system requiring more than one method to verify a user’s identity. It can include two or more of the following:

  • Something you know, such as a Password or PIN.
  • Something you have, like your Smartphone or a hardware token.
  • Something you are, using Biometric (physical) verification methods like fingerprint or facial recognition.

Why Does Flinders University Use MFA?

Universities are increasingly being targeted by sophisticated cyber-criminals. While it might be a little frustrating at times, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is one of the strongest methods to combat these threats, helping to keep you, and the University, safe from attack.

In fact, you’ve probably noticed MFA being implemented across many systems and Applications that you use every day such as social networking and banking Apps!

How does MFA keep me safe?

Cyber attackers are smart, and they target personal information, banking details, and intellectual property, with username and password alone no longer enough to defend from such attacks. MFA adds multiple layers of security to protect your accounts across a range of functions.

Flinders University uses Okta Verify as our primary MFA, with biometric options available for convenience. It’s always best to set up MFA on multiple devices for flexibility and peace of mind. Visit the Flinders University Website to find setup instructions and tips.

Thank you for helping keep our Flinders community safe!
