{"id":1159,"date":"2024-07-23T16:05:42","date_gmt":"2024-07-23T06:35:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-news\/?p=1159"},"modified":"2024-07-23T16:05:42","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T06:35:42","slug":"replacing-plastic-waste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-news\/2024\/07\/23\/replacing-plastic-waste\/","title":{"rendered":"Replacing Plastic Waste"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Flinders is\u00a0 working with our retailers on campus to reduce waste and shift to reusable or recyclable options.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Around the world we recognise that phasing out single-use plastics is an important and achievable step in reducing pollution, cutting carbon emissions and protecting marine life. We must also change how we design, use, and reuse plastics. We cannot simply recycle or reduce our way out of the plastic pollution crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Without action, by 2040 the annual flow of plastic into the ocean will nearly triple &#8211; to 29 million metric tonnes per year, the equivalent of 50kg of plastic for every metre of coastline worldwide and by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in the oceans. Read more about statistics in The New Plastics Economy, 2016 report from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_The_New_Plastics_Economy.pdf\">World Economic Forum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nWhat we\u2019re doing about it<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Australia has taken the lead to address the impacts associated with a range of single-use and other plastic products. The next phase of SA\u2019s <em>Single-use and Other Plastic Products (Waste Avoidance) legislation<\/em> comes into effect with the following items banned from sale, supply and distribution in SA from 1 September 2024:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>plastic barrier bags<\/li>\n<li>thick supermarket and boutique-style plastic bags<\/li>\n<li>EPS consumer food and beverage containers<\/li>\n<li>plastic confetti and plastic balloon sticks\/ties<\/li>\n<li>plastic bread tags<\/li>\n<li>single-use plastic beverage containers (including coffee cups)<\/li>\n<li>single-use plastic food containers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Flinders supports this legislation and as the home of both the College of Science and Engineering\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmrc.com.au\/\">Nano and Microplastic Research Consortium<\/a>\u202f(NMRC)\u202flaboratory and the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training, we lead the country in both research and practical applications.<\/p>\n<p>We are working with our retailers on campus to reduce waste and shift to reusable or recyclable options to ensure waste doesn\u2019t enter the environment in the first place. This <a href=\"https:\/\/news.flinders.edu.au\/blog\/2024\/03\/07\/need-to-tackle-microplastics\/\">circular economy is part of our commitment to environmental sustainability<\/a>. It is a positive step towards avoiding waste and promoting local innovation and a circular economy.
