{"id":632,"date":"2020-09-02T14:59:24","date_gmt":"2020-09-02T05:29:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-news\/?p=632"},"modified":"2020-09-02T14:59:24","modified_gmt":"2020-09-02T05:29:24","slug":"celebrating-flinders-students-inspiring-volunteer-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-news\/2020\/09\/02\/celebrating-flinders-students-inspiring-volunteer-stories\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Flinders Students\u2019  Inspiring Volunteer Stories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of Flinders University\u2019s celebrations for <strong>National Student Volunteer Week 2020<\/strong>, the <strong>Flinders Careers and Employability<\/strong> team held the <strong>People&#8217;s Choice Award<\/strong> to recognise a student whose volunteer story inspires others.<\/p>\n<p>It was truly a pleasure to read all the submitted entries and to see the valuable contribution each of our students is making in their communities!<\/p>\n<p>Based on Flinders University staff and students votes, the <strong>2020 People&#8217;s Choice Award<\/strong> was presented to <strong>Tasnim Jahan Mim<\/strong>. The other final nominees were: Bradley Martin, Nitya Devi Sri Ganesh, and Wing Kwan Sally Kwok.<\/p>\n<p>Learn about their amazing volunteer journeys below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2020\u00a0PEOPLE&#8217;S CHOICE AWARD WINNER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tasnim Jahan Mim<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Volunteer with\u00a0Red Cross &amp; Southern Cross Care<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I started my journey as a volunteer in Australia a few months ago. I was looking for part-time jobs but due to COVID-19, it was hard for me to get a job. Besides that, I am an international student. I was getting stressed, anxiety and all the negative vibes after I came here. Eventually, I realised, I need to do something to divert my mind from this negative pandemic&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/careerhub.flinders.edu.au\/s\/nsvw-2020\/infoPages\/detail\/388\/tasnim-s-volunteer-story-nsvw2\"><strong>Read more<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>FINAL NOMINEES FOR THE 2020 PEOPLE\u2019S CHOICE AWARD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bradley Martin<\/strong><br \/>\nVolunteer with\u00a0Out for Australia, Queers In Science, and DigiVol<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;While volunteering to manage events presents both personal and logistical challenges, the rewards have far outweighed the costs. Contributing to the community has helped to grow my confidence and skills, benefiting both my studies and work life. Changing the lives of people and inspiring others to make a difference continues to be the most rewarding part of volunteering. It was to meet new people and to learn about the culture.
