{"id":821,"date":"2021-08-04T12:09:16","date_gmt":"2021-08-04T02:39:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-news\/?p=821"},"modified":"2021-08-04T12:09:16","modified_gmt":"2021-08-04T02:39:16","slug":"student-complaints-reviews-and-appeals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.flinders.edu.au\/student-news\/2021\/08\/04\/student-complaints-reviews-and-appeals\/","title":{"rendered":"Student complaints, reviews and appeals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We hope that your time at Flinders University will be rewarding and enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p>While studying with us if you encounter an issue with your course or topic, a University service, or an action or behaviour of another student or a staff member that needs to be resolved, you can request that the specific issue is investigated by following the University\u2019s complaint resolution steps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do I do if I have a complaint? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most complaints can be resolved informally by raising your concerns with the person who is responsible for the matter or decision. If you have not been able to resolve your complaint informally, or do not wish to discuss your complaint informally, you can make a formal complaint in writing using the online student complaints <a href=\"https:\/\/students.flinders.edu.au\/feedback-rights-policy\/complaints-and-appeals\/formal-complaints\/student-complaint-form\">form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Flinders will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>take your complaint seriously<\/li>\n<li>treat all parties with fairness and impartiality<\/li>\n<li>resolve your complaint as quickly as possible<\/li>\n<li>apply the principles of procedural fairness<\/li>\n<li>treat your complaint with\u00a0appropriate confidentiality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>What if I don\u2019t agree with a University decision? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A review of a decision is the second formal stage in the University\u2019s internal complaints and appeals processes.\u00a0Reviewable decisions include the outcome of a complaint or a formal decision by a University Committee or decision-maker. Examples of reviewable decisions include:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/content\/dam\/documents\/staff\/policies\/academic-students\/assessment-policy.pdf\">A topic grade<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/content\/dam\/documents\/staff\/policies\/academic-students\/credit-transfer.pdf\">A decision about an application for credit\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/content\/dam\/documents\/staff\/policies\/academic-students\/student-progress-policy.pdf\">An unsatisfactory student progress decision<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/content\/dam\/documents\/staff\/policies\/academic-students\/hdr-progression-procedures.pdf\">A HDR progress decision<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Before submitting a request for a review, you are encouraged to discuss the matter with the decision maker, who can inform you of the reasons for the decision.<\/p>\n<p>Your request for review must be made within 20 University business days of being advised of the decision. You can submit your request using the online review <a href=\"https:\/\/students.flinders.edu.au\/feedback-rights-policy\/complaints-and-appeals\/reviews\/student-request-review-form\">form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you are not satisfied with the outcome of your request for review, you may be able to lodge an appeal with the Student Appeals Committee. An appeal against a University review decision may be lodged only on one or more of the following grounds:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>that new and relevant material exists that was not reasonably available to the student before the review decision was made and that would have a significant impact on the decision<\/li>\n<li>that there was a misapplication of policy or procedure resulting in some real disadvantage to the student<\/li>\n<li>that the sanction applied was manifestly excessive, or<\/li>\n<li>that there was a bias or a conflict of interest on the part of the reviewer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your appeal must be made within 20 University business days of the outcome of the review. You can submit your appeal application using the online appeal <a href=\"https:\/\/students.flinders.edu.au\/feedback-rights-policy\/complaints-and-appeals\/appeals\/student-appeal-form\">form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the University\u2019s complaint, review and appeal process, please look at the Complaints and Appeals <a href=\"https:\/\/students.flinders.edu.au\/feedback-rights-policy\/complaints-and-appeals\/appeals\/student-appeal-form\">webpage<\/a>.
