[all staff email] Dear colleagues

Now that the holiday season is almost upon us, I want to sincerely thank you for your contributions to Flinders University and our students throughout 2022.

Our university continues to make very strong progress on all fronts.

Our world-class researchers have done it again, delivering yet another record performance. The forecast shows our research income for 2022 will exceed $100m for the first time ever. This is a 27% increase on last year and represents an impressive total growth of 120% over the last five years. This is testament to the calibre and quality of our researchers, who are helping answer some of the most pressing questions of our time.

Our academics have also continued to drive our reputation as a trailblazer in contemporary education, with students placing Flinders #1 in SA and #3 nationally for the quality of the educational experience we provide.

Meanwhile, our graduates are amongst the most highly sought after in Australia with exceptional postgraduate employment rates and starting salaries.

You should all be proud of these achievements as they predict a strong future ahead of us.

Our trajectory has also enabled us to make some fearless commitments to our next chapter.

One of these is our new city campus at Festival Plaza, where construction is already well advanced. Planning is also underway for the courses to be offered there, with a number of staff involved in this detailed work. These discussions will continue into 2023 as we finalise arrangements to start teaching in Flinders@Festival Plaza in 2024.

Another major commitment is our new Health and Medical Research Building, which is under construction next to the Flinders train station. Progress on the building is clear for all to see, with topping-out expected early next year and full construction completed in early 2024.

These are all exciting developments for Flinders University, and we can expect more to follow as we chart our own course towards a strong and successful future.

This year has also seen the progressive unwinding of the COVID restrictions that have impacted us for so long.

While we are getting back to normal, I am conscious that many have found it difficult adjusting to the ‘new normal’. Travel remains complex and very expensive, and many may still be awaiting an opportunity to see friends and family overseas.

I do hope you find some time over the holidays to relax and connect with loved ones, even if this includes via Facetime or Skype. I also hope you take some time to recharge your batteries for another exciting year ahead.

With many thanks and season’s greetings,
