Day on Thursday, a day dedicated to fostering genuine connections and lending support to those who may be struggling with the complexities of life. It is also a moment to affirm the importance of our mental health and wellbeing as a daily priority, not just an annual event.

The past few years have brought unique challenges, with the global pandemic affecting us all in various ways. Isolation, uncertainty, and anxiety have become more prevalent, making it even more crucial to reach out to one another.

R U OK? Day reminds us that a simple conversation can make a world of difference. It can provide solace to someone who is struggling, spark hope in times of despair, and strengthen the bonds within our university community.

In acknowledgement of the importance we place on wellbeing in our community every day of the year, please come along to our R U OK? morning tea, on the Ground Floor of the Student Hub in Bedford Park on Thursday at 10am.

I encourage you to participate in R U OK? Day, not just as an annual event but as a mindset that we carry with us throughout the year. Let us be proactive in supporting our colleagues, friends, and students, by creating a culture of openness, where seeking help is not seen as a sign of weakness but as an act of courage.

In addition to asking others if they’re okay, let us also reflect on our own wellbeing. Self-care is a fundamental aspect of being able to support others effectively. Reach out to our Employee Assistance Program, or simply talk to a trusted friend or family member if you need assistance.

For staff who may notice a student who is struggling and in need of extra support, please encourage them to connect with our Counselling Service, which is available to all undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled at Flinders, including students studying online.

Together, we can make Flinders University a place where mental health is not stigmatised but openly discussed, where wellbeing flourishes, and where support is readily available.

Regards,

Colin

There is no greater priority than the health and wellbeing of every member of our Flinders University community.
