This event marked the beginning of another exciting new chapter in our pursuit of scientific excellence and impact.

It was a great honour to host both the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, and the South Australian Premier, Peter Malinauskas, at the event along with an impressive array of dignitaries, industry partners, collaborators, alumni, donors, and of course our much-valued staff and students.

Joining Louise Miller-Frost MP, Prime Minister Albanese and Premier Malinauskas on a tour of the labs, where researchers like Professor Karin Nordstrom shared a little about their life-changing research

Reflecting on our journey, planning for this building began in earnest long before we had heard of Covid-19. The pandemic created many uncertainties, and some might have decided to ride it out before progressing with a project of the scale of the HMRB. However, we managed to maintain a strong financial position throughout, and this enabled Council to make a fearless but fiscally sound decision in 2021 to proceed with construction.

The decision was made on the basis of exceptional work done by many colleagues across the university, demonstrating the value of the project alongside our financial capacity to deliver. The result is a phenomenal new research facility that will enable the university to achieve its strategic research goals and meet the needs of researchers for decades to come.

Professor Claire Roberts shares about her research during the lab tour

The HMRB stands as a beacon of innovation, excellence, and collaboration. It embodies the extraordinary efforts of countless individuals from initial design to final completion. It’s not only a marvel of modern architecture and functionality but also a symbol of our respect for Indigenous knowledge and traditions. Designed in close collaboration with our senior elder on campus, Uncle Lewis Yarlupurka O’Brien , the building reflects the red and ochre tones of Kaurna Yarta, the land of the Kaurna people, and integrates their cultural narratives.

I am proud to share that the HMRB is the world’s first research institute to achieve platinum WiredScore certification and boasts gold WELL and LEED certifications for sustainability and wellbeing.
