Flinders-Nankai Graduate Profile – Dr WANG Kunhua (MHA ’07)

Doctor WANG Kunhua says international recognition and respect for a Masters qualification were of the upmost importance as he strived to move beyond being a good doctor to an accomplished hospital administrator.

Now, as President of First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University in Yunnan Province, Dr WANG says his studies in the Flinders-Nankai program set him on a path where his work is making a significant difference.

“Yunnan is surrounded by Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos, sharing a border of 4,060 kilometres, so it holds a significant position for driving innovations in medical treatment, medical education and medical research,” says Dr WANG.

“China has a leading role in the world, so hospitals in Yunnan need to have an international vision and position. They must radiate to a wider area, to improve people’s health. Through cooperating with hospitals of all countries, we can extend the influence of hospitals and Chinese medicine to all countries in Southeast Asia and other international stages.”

Since graduating, Dr WANG Kunhua is proud to have led the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University to become one of the top 100 well-known large-scale general hospitals in China, and one of the best-known hospitals in Southwest China. It has established a Key Drug Rehabilitation Laboratory within the National Health Care Commission. Dr Wang received an Outstanding Contribution Award – a prize given every two years to outstanding hospital directors in China.

Beyond this, he has become a member of the Yunnan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and a member of the government’s think tank, provided advice for medical industry peers in the government’s medical reform, made suggestions for reforming government medicine and hospital system and policy, and provided expertise in areas of patient treatment, hospital development and medical reform.

Dr WANG Kunhua says he has been able to achieve this because of his studies. “I was eager to explore solutions to hospital administration problems,” he says, “so I was pleased the Flinders-Nankai project adopts advanced learning and exchange teaching modes, integrates teaching and research, uses cutting-edge teaching materials and advanced teaching methods, and cultivates a very high level of English in the field of medical management in China.

“The hospital administration program cultivates excellent talents for succeeding in the field of medical management. It focuses on efficient teaching methods and current international hospital management theory, which is highly praised by the Ministry of Education and widely recognised by all sectors of society.”

Dr WANG Kunhua says the MHA teachers from Flinders University provided excellent professional theory, international vision and practical operational hospital management knowledge that reflects the work he is now engaged in.

“During my studies, I was deeply impressed that the teaching was adapted to national conditions in China, and introduced advanced hospital administration concepts, along with developing trends of international hospital administration.

“Having transnational lectures in the Flinders-Nankai program provided students with exchange opportunities and to study with domestic experts, scholars and managers in the industry. I remain in touch with fellow MHA graduates, because we are still keen to learn from each other and often share the problems we are facing in hospital administration reform.

“By combining theory with practical knowledge, the students’ understanding of professional knowledge is deepened and the learning is put into practice.”

Dr WANG Kunhua made this transition quickly. In the first year after graduating from the MHA program, he was Chief Surgeon focusing on medical treatment but also participating in the management of hospital departments, surgery teaching programs and the hospital’s Research Office.

He soon progressed to serve as Director of Surgery, involved in both teaching and the Research Office, and Dr WANG Kunhua was subsequently elected as the Vice Director for the department of administration, then the Director and now Deputy President of the First People’s Hospital of Yunnan Province. Six years later, he was transferred to the First Affiliated Hospital of the Kunming Medical University, a larger hospital where he was appointed as President.

Since childhood, Dr WANG Kunhua wanted to become a doctor with excellent medical skills to help people and relieve patients’ pain. “Now, I am the manager of a hospital, but the power of one person is small,” he says. “More importantly, I lead a group of medical workers and the power of groups is great, and capable of building a better world. A person can go faster alone, a group of talents can lead you further, but there is no perfect individual, just perfect teams.”

He has ambitious plans to build an Internet hospital that can integrate the needs of Internet information technology, hospital technology and medical services that can connect people in the remote mountain areas of Yunnan to major hospital services.

“Thinking of these plans urges me to rethink what I want to do – to be a good doctor for patients, a good leader for peers, and a good conscience for the medical industry. I can use my strength to relieve pain, lead peers and influence society, but I also want to guide reform and innovation, participate in policy-making and establish a better medical service system to remove disadvantages and promote development.

“Learning is a lifelong continuous process. In the future, I must do a good job in hospital management by leading the way, constantly facing difficulties head on in the wave of medical reform and making innovations to ensure the overall development of the hospital. My studies may have finished, but I need to keep learning and thinking, to become a knowledgeable and moral leader.”
