Helping vulnerable populations by expanding your sphere of influence

In 2019 Tim Kittel (BSpPath ‘01) became the President of Speech Pathology Australia, the national peak body for the speech pathology profession in Australia.

As a speech pathologist at Headstart Intervention Services in Adelaide, Tim works with children and adolescents with a range of developmental disorders including Language Disorder, Social Communication Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

He gained an Honours Degree in English Literature before completing his Speech Pathology degree at Flinders University in 2001.

As a practicing speech pathologist, Tim has spent time in both the United Kingdom and Australia, where he has worked in a range of health and disability settings, and chiefly in senior roles within the education sector.

In 2015 he was invited to apply for a Board position. Completely new to governance and advocacy, Tim set about teaching himself about boards, including completing the Australian Institute of Directors’ Company Directors Course.

Tim recently recorded a conversation with Megan Walker of Market Savvy Conversations about the challenges and the future for speech pathology and allied health.

“The conversation turned pretty quickly to the idea of strategy, and how people with an allied health background can contribute to board work,” says Tim.

“With Royal Commissions into both Aged Care and Disability, people with Clinical Governance backgrounds have something to add to the conversation about improving life for vulnerable populations.”
