Bushfires inspire editorial on compassion and caring

An editorial by Caring Futures Institute Foundational Director Professor Alison Kitson,  inspired by this summer’s bushfire crisis, was published in an international journal recently.

The article, published in the Journal of Clinical Nursing, is titled Rising from the ashes: Affirming the spirit of courage, community resilience, compassion and caring.

Professor Kiston, who is also the Institute’s Knowledge Translation research lead, reflects on the need for these traits not only in times of community disaster, but also in our health care system and beyond.

“Caring about the world we live in; our responsibility for the stewardship of our land, our planet; and caring enough about how good decisions are made that we speak up and speak out about injustice, greed and duplicity in or businesses, political and other institutions. Caring enough that we do, … understand that out of adversity we can grow but we need the wisdom to understand that it is only out of recognition of our weakness, vulnerability and interdependencies that we can make things better,” the article says.

Caring Futures Institute ambassador Judith Leeson, who lives in the Adelaide Hills, was featured in the piece, following the authoring of her own Caring Futures Institute opinion piece in February.
