Effective teaching of critical thinking – discussions

We have two presentation/ discussion forums on critical thinking coming up this week and next . Both presentations are about how to teach critical thinking in specially tailored discipline- related topics.  One is from STEM and the other is based in HASS. They both focus on teaching the skills of critical reasoning explicitly rather than implicitly.

  • Dr Jeanne Young and Narelle Hunter will talk about the development of their topic ‘the Nature of Science’ – a new science topic which uses critical and ethical reasoning in combination with self-reflection to scaffold the process of scientific thinking and what it means to be a scientist.
    Date and time: November 20th – 2.30-4.00pm
    Where: Studio 2

  • Associate Professor Ian Ravenscroft will talk about a long-standing generalist topic offered through Philosophy called ‘Critical Reasoning’ and the work he is undertaking to develop an accessible online critical thinking topic – exploring content and approaches that have been shown to work over the years in developing students’ critical thinking skills.
    Date and time: November 28th – 11.00-12.30pm
    Where: Studio 2

Everyone welcome.
