Professor Fran Baum gave a keynote address entitled Political and ideological barriers and enablers to effective action on the social determinants of health and health equity to the annual meeting of the European Society of Philosophy of Medicine and Healthcare in Zagreb, Croatia in August.
The conference was on the topic of the Ethics of Social Determinants of Health and gave Fran the chance to meet many European colleagues working in like areas. Zagreb was one of the original WHO designated Healthy Cities lives up to this reputation with its extensive, efficient public transport, considerable numbers of green parks and open spaces and protection of its heritage. Fran is pictured here with the conference organiser Dr. Ana Borovečki. The conference was held at the Andrija Stampar School of Public Health University of Zagreb. Originally the conference was to be held in Istanbul but was moved away because of the heightened terrorism threat there.
The conference opened with the reading of a moving statement Professor Yesim Isil Ulman Professor and Departmental Chair of Medical History and Ethics, Acibadem University, Istanbul who noted that none of the Turkish philosophers were able to be there because of their government’s ban on all travel by academics.
