I have two particularly cherished memories of nurses and midwives.
The first is of a nurse appearing at night out of nowhere when I was struggling with how to breastfeed my first child soon after he had been born. Her name was Geri. They were the moments when I realised what was going right with breastfeeding, and from then on I had confidence and was able to do it.
The second memory is of my being in a mental hospital ward at approximately 40 years of age, and coming in bedraggled and unkempt. Two nurses gave me a shower and I really appreciated their care at a time when I felt so ill.
I went on, eventually, to become an award-winning (for one of my subjects) Flinders University law student.
