World Social Work Day 2024

Today on World Social Work Day, Flinders would like to acknowledge the work of over 5,260 Flinders Social Work alumni who have been changing lives, communities and society as a whole. You can read below about Nasir, David and Kerry – three outstanding graduates who came to Flinders as postgraduate students and are each making a significant impact in their fields.

 

Kerry Beck (BSocWk Grad Entry ’05) is Director of Family Services in the Department of Human Services. Her dedication to helping vulnerable children and their families is what drives her to play the long game of improving the systems that support them. Her achievements in the sector were recognised at the 2023 South Australia Social Worker of the Year Awards when she received the Agent of Change Award. This award honours the outstanding contribution by a social worker who makes a transformative difference through organisational or systems change to individuals, families or communities. Since migrating to Australia in 2006, Nasir Hussain (MSW’16) has devoted himself to building bridges between the Muslim and wider-Australian communities, which includes helping new migrants & international students settle into their new lives in Adelaide through his not-for-profit, Muslim Australia Connections of SA (MACSA). His commitment to volunteering in multiple organisations saw him receive the City of Charles Sturt Citizen of the Year Award in 2023. Nasir was recognised as a finalist for the 2021 SA Social Worker of the Year Award. In 2018, and again in 2023, he was a finalist in the Governor’s Multicultural Award in the volunteering category. After many years as a counsellor and numerous management roles across health and education, David Wild (MSW ’15) moved into his first Chief Executive role leading a unique school in the Adelaide CBD, the Specialised Assistance School for Youth, that provides a holistic approach to education, combining student-driven learning with a focus on wellbeing. In 2023 David was recognised in InDaily’s 40 under 40 for making a positive difference for South Australia. Read more
