It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of graduate and beloved former Flinders staff member, Associate Professor Pauline Glover (DipT(NursEd) ’80, MNgSt(Cwk) ’94, EdD ‘01). Pauline was an extraordinary educator, leader, and advocate whose impact on nursing and midwifery in the Northern Territory, South Australia, and across Australia has been profound.
Pauline’s distinguished 50‑year career was a lifetime of service, innovation, and leadership, helping to shape the future of midwifery practice.
Pauline joined Sturt College of Advanced Education (later Flinders University) in 1987, returning to her early passion for teaching. On discovering that midwifery was not offered at the time, she took the initiative to develop a Master of Midwifery program, followed by a Bachelor of Midwifery for nurses seeking to expand their skills. She was instrumental in the creation of the direct‑entry midwifery program in 2002 and was twice recognised with Vice‑Chancellor awards for excellence in teaching.
From 2004 to 2008, Pauline served as Associate Dean (Academic Program) in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Alongside her academic leadership, Pauline completed three qualifications at Flinders, including her Doctor of Education, and contributed extensively to committees, working groups, and the broader University community.
Her influence extended well beyond the University. Pauline was a Life Member of the Australian College of Midwives, a former editor of the Australian Midwifery Journal, and a widely published academic. In 2006 she was honoured as one of the inaugural recipients of the Flinders University Distinguished Alumni Award. Even in retirement, she continued her service to vulnerable families and was named Marion Citizen of the Year in 2022.
Pauline often spoke of the joy she found in her work and the deep pride she took in supporting and inspiring her students. Her legacy lives on in the thousands of midwives and nurses she taught, mentored, and encouraged throughout her remarkable career.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Pauline’s family, friends, colleagues, and the many members of our community who were touched by her warmth, dedication, and generosity.
May she be remembered with gratitude and admiration.
