The US Department of Defense, under its lung cancer research programme, invites pre-applications for its concept award. This supports the exploration of a highly innovative new concept or untested theory that addresses an important problem relevant to lung cancer, and high-risk studies that have the potential to reveal entirely new avenues for investigation. Applications should address at least one of the following areas:

  • identifying or developing non-invasive or minimally invasive tools to improve the detection of the initial stages of lung cancer;
  • identifying, developing or building upon already existing tools for screening or early detection of lung cancer;
  • understanding the molecular mechanisms of progression to clinically significant lung cancer;
  • understanding the molecular mechanisms of initiation and progression to clinically significant lung cancer;
  • identifying innovative strategies for prevention and treatment of early or localised lung cancer;
  • understanding predictive and prognostic markers to identify responders and non-responders;
  • understanding susceptibility or resistance to treatment;
  • understanding contributors to lung cancer development other than tobacco;
  • Identify innovative strategies for lung cancer care delivery.

Clinical trials are not supported and preliminary data are not required. The proposed research must be relevant to active duty service members, veterans, military beneficiaries or the general public.

This supports translational research in the area of lung cancer that will be developed into clinical applications. Awards are worth up to USD 400,000 each over two years.

Translational research partnership award

Closing date: 26 Jun 18

Maximum award: USD 900,000

Visit the Funder’s Website for more information.  Click here.

This supports the development of translational research collaborations between two independent investigators to address a central problem or question in lung cancer in a manner that would be less readily achievable through separate efforts. Awards are worth up to USD 900,000 each over three years.
