The Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) expects genuine involvement from consumers in MRFF research, and continues to implement changes to the application and assessment process to strengthen and support consumer involvement in all stages of MRFF-funded research.
In 2022, the MRFF refreshed its assessment criteria to include more explicit expectations for consumer involvement.
Now, the following changes will come into effect progressively from mid-2024:
- All applications will include a Consumer Involvement Statement (usually 2-3 pages).
- To support inclusion of consumers (e.g., those with lived experience, carers, representatives from partner organisations) as Chief Investigators on MRFF applications, research team capacity and capability assessment will focus more on the team’s relevant skills, knowledge, experience, and impact in the field; rather than traditional elements of track record (e.g., publications, grants, and conferences invitations).
- Applicants can request funding for consumer involvement activities and expenses, including appropriately remunerating consumers for their time and contribution.
The MRFF has released guidance for consumers on how to navigate Sapphire and Business Grants Hub.
