Superior supervisor wins top HDR honour

Promoting a positive and supportive approach to Higher Degree by Research (HDR) supervision has seen Professor Youhong Tang recognised with a prestigious annual award.

Professor Tang, from the College of Science and Engineering, is the 2022 recipient of the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Supervision, an award which recognises the outstanding achievements of HDR Supervisors.

Professor Tang was nominated for this prestigious award by several of his HDR students, who describe him as a “positive and approachable” mentor, and is notable for “patiently inspiring me and providing his perspective and experience, which gives me enough confidence and enthusiasm to solve the problems”. Another student said they appreciate his support and quiet encouragement.

“Professor Tang has supported and encouraged me, given me advice and strengthened my will of study and doing research,” said the student in their nomination. “Besides complimenting my achievements, he also reminds me whenever I was distracted from my study and brought me back to the way I planned to go from the beginning”.

Professor Tang will be recognised for his outstanding contribution to HDR Supervision at Flinders University at an awards ceremony later this year.

As part of the prize, Professor Tang will deliver a professional development session to fellow HDR Supervisors on his experiences of working with STEM PhD students at different stages of their studies. HDR Supervisors can enrol online to attend this session: https://inspire.flinders.edu.au/flinders/#he/dev/eventDetails,;em,providerCode=OGR,providerOrgAlias=flinders,number=407
