Celebrating 10 years of the FCIC

Flinders University and Flinders Foundation are celebrating 10 years of hope and healing at the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer (FCIC).

Opened in 2012, FCIC was South Australia’s first integrated cancer centre, combining world-class compassionate care and survivorship with groundbreaking prevention and early intervention research. From its inception, it has been driven by a passion and vision for our community to live happier and longer lives, with the people they love.

As part of Flinders Foundation’s new campaign, you can read first-hand experiences of researchers, clinicians and patients, and how the compassion and kindness of the community has helped shape FCIC’s remarkable history.

FCIC been home to significant breakthroughs since it opened a decade ago. This cutting-edge research includes the discovery of a link between red meat and cancer, and a bowel cancer test which contributed to the development of Australia’s national bowel cancer screening program.

With a focus on wellness over illness, the FCIC established the world’s oldest cancer survivorship conference in 2013 and is now a world-leader in the field. The Flinders survivorship program includes a Wellness Centre on the ground floor of FCIC, which provides holistic support to people with cancer and their families.

To commemorate the 10-year anniversary, Flinders Foundation is sharing first-hand experiences of researchers, clinicians and patients, and how the compassion and kindness of the community has helped shape FCIC’s remarkable history at https://cancer.flindersfoundation.org.au

A global rankings present

In a timely boost to anniversary celebrations, FCIC has recently been ranked 7th in Australia and 230th in the world for specialised oncology hospitals by global news site Newsweek – one of only a few South Australian hospitals featured in the rankings, and the only SA hospital in the oncology speciality.

Newsweek’s World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2023 is based on a global survey of medical professionals, run in partnership with global research firm Statista. You can see the full list of specialised hospitals and read more on the ranking methodology here.
