Researchers can catch up on media training

To help Flinders researchers and academics get the best media traction for their work, a recording from the recent Media Training for Researchers with (AusSMC) is now available to view online.

The media training session was led by Dr Joseph Milton, Senior Media Officer at Australian Science Media Centre (AusSMC), who provided helpful tips for researchers to understand the media, how it works, what it wants and how to increase media interest in – and increase coverage of – your research.

Dr Milton was joined at the workshop by Karen Ashford, Director of Media and Communications, other journalists and Flinders researchers Professor Corey Bradshaw and Dr Romain Fathi, who provided their own perspectives on why and how researchers should engage with the media.

Queries covered in this session included:

  • What can we learn from journalists when we’re telling stories about our research?
  • Why is communicating research via the news media important?
  • What is the mainstream media?
  • How do you tell your research story in an engaging, conversational way?
  • The media landscape an industry on the ropes – how has news changed and what does that mean for researchers?
  • How and why are news stories structured in a particular way?
  • Should our research story be dumbing it down… or making the information accessible?
