Student Council elections a success

Students recently turned out in large numbers across Flinders Campuses and online to vote for candidates for the 2024 Student Council Election.

The Flinders University Students Association (FUSA) is a student led association representing the rights and interests of Flinders students. Organised by FUSA, the annual elections allow students to vote for the FUSA Student Council, as well as the editorial team for Empire Times, the student magazine, and delegates to the National Union of Students.

The Student Council is made up of 14 Office Bearers with portfolio responsibilities (such as President and Education Officer) and six General Council members. They determine the direction of FUSA as an organisation and sit on a variety of committees across the University and advocate on behalf of student’s rights, interests, and welfare.

Passionate about building a vibrant student community, Student Council also help coordinate a range of FUSA campaigns and initiatives in areas such as student welfare, diversity and inclusion, safety on campus, clubs and associations, and more.

‘Student leadership and voice is more important than ever, and the new Student Council with our first ever International Student President, is well placed to advocate and engage on behalf of our many student communities,’ said Ben Smith, FUSA Manager.

This year’s elections had a record number of campaigners and included a lively debate between presidential candidates, expertly moderated by Dr Ali Enright, Chair of the University Student Success Working Group.

The new Council will begin their tenure on 1 December. Stay tuned to future editions of Flinders in Touch where we’ll be introducing the student representatives to the Flinders community.
