Exciting new teaching, research facilities

Colleagues from across Flinders University gathered in the Physical Sciences Teaching Space on 28 November to officially celebrate the opening of four of the College of Science and Engineering’s new state-of-the-art facilities, including the Undergraduate ‘Wet’ Teaching Labs, Chemistry Research Labs, PC2 Glasshouse and Biodiversity Facility.

The celebration opened with a poignant and thought-provoking Welcome to Country from Uncle Mickey Kumatpi Marrutya O’Brien, Senior Kaurna and Narrunga man, who reminded the audience of the importance of knowledge and our responsibility to collect and share knowledge with the wellbeing of others in mind.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Colin Stirling delivered an inspiring address that highlighted the College’s success, growth and achievements in research, grant funding and teaching. Chancellor John Hood was also in attendance to celebrate the new facilities.

Even formalities concluded with a panel discussion led by Vice President and Executive Dean Alistair Rendell, with representatives from four facilities: Leslie Morrison, Peter Anderson, Sue Pyke and Michelle Coote. They explained how the redevelopment of facilities has significantly improved teaching and research capabilities.

Thanks to a brief break in some wild weather, the Properties, Facilities and Development team and key facilities staff led event attendees on a tour of each new facility, sharing details about the construction process and providing insight to the leading-edge teaching and research taking place in these spaces.
