Secondary confidentialised data access opportunities

The Central Library has provided an update on a range of secondary confidentialised data access opportunities.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics/Universities Australia agreement allows researchers from our university to apply for free of charge access to various confidentialised datasets. The full list of all 250 datasets available can be found here.

The new data releases in 2023 include:

  • Barriers and Incentives to Labour Force Participation, 2022-23
  • Education and Work, 2023
  • Census 2021 – Additional information on topics such as distance to work, SEIFA, income, and Temporary visa holders.
  • Census 2021 – Access is now extended to the provision of the 5% 2021 Census Basic Microdata
  • Retirement and Retirement Intentions, 2021-22
  • Cultural and Creative Activities, 2021-22
  • A directory of data items from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander collections, relating to mental health and social and emotional wellbeing.

The ABS has been working on initiatives aimed at the longitudinal integration of different datasets, including:

  • Australian Census Longitudinal Dataset
    • This dataset uses the Census of Population and Housing to build a longitudinal picture giving an overview of social and economic change over time. Three waves of data have so far contributed to the ACLD from the 2006 Census (Wave 1), 2011 Census (Wave 2) and 2016 Census (Wave 3).
  • The Business Longitudinal Analysis Data Environment (BLADE)
    • BLADE combines business tax data and information from ABS surveys over time to provide a better understanding of Australian businesses and the economy.
  • Multi-Agency Data Integration Project
    • The Multi-Agency Data Integration Project (MADIP) is a partnership among six Australian Government agencies to combine longitudinal information on healthcare, education, government payments and personal income tax with population demographics to create a comprehensive social picture of Australia.

Access to Department of Social Services Longitudinal Datasets

The National Centre for Longitudinal Data (NCLD) is responsible for four major Australian longitudinal studies:

  • The Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey
  • Growing up in Australia: The Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC)
  • Footprints in Time: The Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children (LSIC)
  • Building a New Life in Australia (BNLA): The Longitudinal Study of Humanitarian Migrants
