In touch with … Ella Russo

Flinders’ new Indigenous Communications and Engagement Coordinator, Ella Russo, has hit the ground running. She spoke with us about the diverse nature of her work, and how dance classes help to keep her on her toes.

What is your role at Flinders?

I recently started as Indigenous Communications and Engagement Coordinator within the Office of Indigenous Strategy & Engagement. I mainly focus on management of strategic communications and events, which could involve anything from writing targeted marketing and communications content such as information guides, speeches and articles for media and websites, to the event management and promotion of functions and activities. It’s extremely fast-paced.

How did you get into this area?

My career started in the higher education sector in 2013, where I worked with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and broader student groups. I then progressed to tertiary education in 2017 as an Indigenous Student Success Officer. I have always tried to place myself in organisations which work directly with community to build on strengths, and I’m equally passionate about the success of Indigenous people. I know the importance of self-determination, so when the opportunity came to be part of the team at Yungkurrinthi at Flinders, I knew that’s where I wanted to be.

Describe your work in three words.

My work is stimulating, dynamic and collaborative.

What are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of being a mum and having the privilege of guiding two incredible young humans through life.

Who inspires you?

I gain inspiration from people around me who have flourished despite facing intersectional adversity.

What’s your favourite thing to do in your spare time?

I love to head down to the dance studio. I can usually fit in three, or sometimes a sneaky four classes per week, and like to mix it up with Bachata, Salsa and Rumba.
