Exploring AI’s potential

Flinders University became the epicentre of innovation as it hosted the Innovative Research Universities (IRU) Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the future of research leadership and support symposium. This landmark event brought together research executives, leaders, support colleagues, and AI experts from across Australia, all united by a common goal: to develop a roadmap for maximising AI to support research success in universities.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming integral to every aspect of daily life, and its potential to revolutionise research leadership and support is immense. The symposium aimed to explore how AI can enhance research effectiveness, efficiency, and quality at universities. Flinders University, in collaboration with leaders from the IRUs and technology experts, orchestrated this event to delve into these opportunities.

SPOT sets the tone for innovation

The day began with an exciting and futuristic touch as guests were greeted by SPOT, the robotic dog. SPOT’s presence was more than just a novelty; it was a tangible demonstration of AI’s practical applications in real-world scenarios. SPOT’s welcome set the tone for a day filled with forward-thinking discussions and collaborations.

Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) Professor Raymond Chan kicked off the symposium emphasising the transformative power of AI in research leadership and support activities such as contract drawing, partnership development, grant writing and research impact dissemination, setting the stage for the day’s discussions.

A panel of experts from various fields shared their insights on the current state of AI in research and its potential future applications. The discussion was rich with experiences and best practices, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas.

Participants then engaged in a hands-on workshop designed to identify innovative solutions and share best practices. This interactive session was crucial in building a collaborative roadmap for integrating AI into research support functions. The workshop provided a platform for attendees to brainstorm and collaborate, ensuring that the roadmap would be comprehensive and actionable.

Simon Elisha, Chief Technologist at Amazon Web Services, delivered a compelling keynote on “Transforming Efficiencies in the Modern World and Framework for a Roadmap.” His insights into AI’s role in enhancing efficiencies across various sectors were both enlightening and motivating. Elisha’s address underscored the potential of AI to drive significant improvements in research processes.
