Earlier this month, Professor Simone Ulalka Tur, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous), sent an end of year video message to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff at Flinders.
The message highlighted the remarkable successes of the University’s Indigenous community throughout 2024, such as being recognised twice as a national leader in supporting Indigenous talent, receiving two prestigious Athena Swan Cygnet Awards and Associate Professor Tamara MacKean’s recent leadership appointment as Research Lead, Indigenous Research Strategy.
If you wish to be updated about activities, events, celebrations, RAP actions and Indigenous strategic priorities as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander staff member, and you haven’t received any of these communications, it might be because your status as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person (often referred to as Aboriginality) has not yet been recorded in the Workday system. We use Workday to ensure these communications reach all Indigenous staff.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to share my Aboriginality?
It’s completely up to you whether you choose to identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person in the system. We understand there are many factors, and often personal circumstances, that may influence your decision. We do encourage you to so that you can be informed about – and involved in – initiatives, events, opportunities and celebrations specifically for Indigenous staff at the University.
Why should I update my Aboriginality status?
There is a calendar of exciting events planned for Indigenous staff in 2025. To ensure you do not miss out on any celebrations and opportunities, we encourage you to update your Aboriginality status in Workday. This will help us keep you informed about what is on offer next year.
What happens with the data?
We use data to create email distribution lists ensuring that communications, event invitations, networking and opportunities for Indigenous staff are effectively shared.
Additionally, as part of our commitment to the University’s Reconciliation Action Plan and Indigenous Workforce Strategy, we report on the number of Indigenous staff employed. This helps us strive towards our ambitious goal of having at least three per cent of our workforce be Indigenous.
Do I need to provide a Confirmation of Aboriginality?
If you are a current staff member, you do not need to provide confirmation of your Aboriginality to update your Aboriginality status in Workday. We will only ask for your confirmation of Aboriginality for certain identified roles at the commencement of your employment or by the end of your probation. You can update your Aboriginality status any time in Workday and you do not need to provide evidence, unless we request it from you for an identified role.
How do I update my Aboriginality status in Workday?
If you haven’t identified yet, you can still do so by going into Workday, following the instructions here. You will then be automatically included in all emails and communications to all Indigenous staff, such as job opportunities, events and professional development opportunities.
If you require assistance or would like to discuss any questions you may have, please email indigenous.employment@flinders.edu.au
