New staff – local area WHS induction

To keep Flinders staff and visitors safe, inductions and training are an important part of the University’s systems to keep our workplace welcoming for all. All staff are required to complete a Local Area Work Health & Safety Induction, in addition to the general online induction. It is the responsibility of all supervisors to ensure that new staff receive this induction on their first day at work and again prior to working in any new areas.

The Local Area WHS Induction checklist is now stored using ServiceOne, and has been streamlined to improve its flow. The sign off section has been removed and is now part of the ServiceOne process, enabling a workflow to occur where the supervisor can review and sign off inductions easily. Another benefit is improved visibility for the supervisor regarding who has been inducted and when (as ServiceOne provides a record of all their staff who have completed the induction process).

The Local Area WHS Induction Process

  1. We recommend you complete the Local Area Work Health & Safety Induction checklist The checklist is also available on the WHS web page. Make sure you read the relevant information from the links in the checklist. You and your supervisor should discuss any specific instructions, hazards and controls required to allow you to work safely.

Once completed, the checklist needs to be uploaded into ServiceOne so it can be approved by your supervisor and there is a record.

The ServiceOne process

  1. To upload the checklist, begin by selecting General Services and then searching for “WHS Induction” which will open the ServiceOne page.
  2. The mandatory fields of ServiceOne should self-populate, however these can be edited if needed (i.e., you are undertaking a checklist for a new or different area). There is also the option for staff to write a comment or question for their supervisor.
  3. The completed WHS Induction checklist must be attached.
  4. Then click submit.
