We caught up with Dr Ehsan Abedin, coordinator for the new Business Analytics program at Flinders, to hear more about the new opportunities available for students. He spoke about setting his students up for ongoing success, and how the outdoors keeps him grounded in a fast-paced industry.
What is your role here at Flinders?
I’m Ehsan Abedin, the coordinator for the Business Analytics programs at Flinders University. My role involves ensuring that our graduates are job-ready, equipped with the knowledge and skills to excel in both the technical and business aspects of analytics. I also work closely with industry partners to integrate real-world experience into our courses.
Tell us a little about the new course in Business Analytics.
Our new Business Analytics programs are designed to develop graduates who are bilingual in the language of technology and business. These programs produce professionals who understand both the technical side of analytics and its strategic application in business contexts. Students gain hands-on experience with trendy tools like Power BI, Python, and SQL, while exploring cutting-edge topics such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data visualization. With real-world projects and up to 12 weeks of industry placements, students gain the confidence and skills to solve complex business challenges across various industries.
What is your favourite thing about the new course?
I love how practical and future-focused it is. Students aren’t just learning theory—they’re applying cutting-edge tools and techniques to real-world problems, often through simulations and industry placements.
Why is analytics so important in business?
In today’s fast-evolving world, analytics is the engine driving innovation and growth. Businesses generate massive amounts of data every day, and analytics allows us to transform that raw information into actionable insights. Professionals who can navigate both technical and business aspects are particularly valuable, as they can design solutions that align with business goals. This combination of skills is crucial for improving customer experiences, managing risks, and staying competitive.
How did you get into this field?
I’ve always been passionate about problem-solving and technology. My journey began with exploring how data could help businesses innovate and grow. Over time, I realized that blending technical knowledge with strategic thinking was a powerful way to create impactful solutions, which inspired me to pursue a career in business analytics and share that passion with others.
What’s your favourite thing to do in your spare time?
I love hiking and spending time in nature—it clears my mind and gives me fresh perspectives. On quieter days, I channel my inner chef and make a special pizza with tuna, blue cheese, red onion, chilli and, of course, fresh dough! Trust me, it is a masterpiece!!!
Where’s your favourite spot on campus?
There’s a bench near the lake that’s my absolute Favorite spot. It’s peaceful, but the real show is the ducks taking off—they flap around like they’re late for an early morning meeting!!
