Café Jeju opens at HMRB

Café Jeju features authentic Korean favourites – without the need to travel overseas or even off campus! Flinders’ latest food outlet is now open, inside the Health and Medical Research Building (up the steps/ground floor when entering from the Sturt side).

Using Australian coffee beans, Jeju’s coffee is strong and delicious, sourced from Toby’s Estate (winner of the top gong at the inaugural World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops).

But it’s the Poke Bowls with chicken teriyaki, salmon or katsu chicken and Bibimbap (mixed rice bowls) which steal the show. Think rice, bean sprouts, cucumber, shredded carrot, pickled red cabbage, beef bulgogi and topped with egg and a dollop of gochujang sauce.

“Our bowls differentiate us from other food outlets on campus,” says Café Jeju owner, David Lim. “They are healthy and customisable and we have both dine-in and grab-and-go options available. Plus anyone can order online and collect their meal from the counter.”

But Jeju’s signature drinks are also stand-outs. “It’s all about the quality of our Matcha!” David says. “Researchers at the HMRB already cannot get enough of our ‘Matcha Cream Latte’ and ‘Ice Strawberry Matcha Latte’.”

David and the team are well known for delivering what the thirsty and hungry masses want on campus, having also managed Chico Tea Boba Project and Bakmi Lim in the Student Hub for the last three years.

“We started by selling bubble tea after students requested it. It’s been very popular,” David says. “We then opened Bakmi Lim, with Indonesian-inspired dishes, handmade noodles and chicken rice – all in good serving sizes, at an affordable price.”

David and his wife, Wendy, have been in the food industry for almost a decade, but love working at Flinders the most. “It’s so much better than working in the city and suburbs. People are friendly and it’s so relaxed. When the expression of interest process opened to run the HMRB café, we jumped at the chance to submit a bid, and are so happy we were successful.”

Look out for Café Jeju’s official Grand Opening deals in the coming weeks. Visit their website and follow them on their socials. Also keep them in mind to cater for your next event.

You can walk or catch a campus bus to Café Jeju. The Station Express services run from Registry Road and the Campus Connector from multiple stops around campus.

What’s in a name?

제주

“We chose Café Jeju (pronounced Jay Joo) for our name after falling in love with Jeju Island in South Korea,” David says.

“As a relaxed and lush holiday destination, Jeju is famous for its fresh ingredients, green tea and mindful approach to food. So, we thought the name perfectly fitted with the wellness we offer staff and students through the healthy food at our café.”
