The Indigenous Naming Policy is a new policy that will operate alongside the University’s Naming Policy specifically to govern naming that may use traditional place names or words from Indigenous languages.
The policy will apply to any use of traditional place names or words from Indigenous languages to name or co-name any part of the University’s physical environment. The policy permits using traditional place names or words from Indigenous languages to name:
- University campuses
- Campus geographical spaces (dedicated as such under the Campus Master Plan), and
- University facilities specifically dedicated to the education, research or student engagement of Indigenous people.
The policy sets out the factors to be considered, the consultation / engagement requirements and approval requirements for such naming, including consultation with Flinders’ Elders Network and engagement with locally connected Indigenous communities and custodians, and ensuring any necessary consents or permissions are obtained from those communities and/or their representative organisations.
